The Ahmanson Theater is a theater in Los Angeles , California .

It is one of the top four Los Angeles Music Center venues . Renovated in 1994, its seating capacity can be configured between 1600 and 2100 as required.

Thanks to the generosity of the philanthropist Robert H. Ahmanson, construction began on March 9, 1962. The theater opened on April 12, 1967 with the play "More Stately Mansions" by Eugene O'Neill . Ingrid Bergman , Arthur Hill and Colleen Dewhurst played the leading roles .

Since then, a variety of dramas, musicals, comedies and classical works have been seen, including six world premieres by Neil Simon and works by Wendy Wasserstein , August Wilson , Albert Ramsdell Gurney , Terrence McNally , John Guare and Edward Albee . The Ahmanson Theater has shown co-productions for a number of Broadway plays including "Amadeus," "Smokey Joe's Cafe," "The Most Happy Fella," and "The Drowsy Chaperone."

The Ahmanson Theater is one of the largest theaters on the west coast. The theater season is almost all year round, starting in early autumn and continuing through the end of summer. In December 2006, a musical adaptation of Tim Burton's film Edward Scissorhands was staged here. The adaptation was directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne .
