Colleen Dewhurst
Colleen Rose Dewhurst (born June 3, 1924 in Montreal , Québec , Canada , † August 22, 1991 in Salem , New York ) was a Canadian film and theater actress .
Life
Colleen Dewhurst was the only child of Fred Dewhurst, a hockey player for the Ottawa Roughriders . Although she grew up in the United States from the age of 13, it is not known whether she ever received US citizenship. However, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , to which Dewhurst was elected in 1990, lists her as a Fellow , not a Foreign Honorary Member .
After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, she made her debut in an episode of the short-lived television series Decoy in 1958 .
Dewhurst's real passion was the theater. On Broadway , she appeared in numerous theater productions, including in 1973 alongside Jason Robards in A Moon for the Loaded by Eugene O'Neill . As a film actress, Dewhurst appeared predominantly in television series and television films. Her best-known role was played in 1985 as "Marilla Cuthbert" in the miniseries Anne on Green Gables . She appeared in the same role in three episodes of the Canadian television series The City Girl (Road to Avonlea) in 1990 shortly before her death.
Private
Dewhurst was married three times, to one of the men twice. In 1947 she married the actor James Vickery , the marriage divorced in 1960. In the same year she married the film actor George C. Scott , with whom she had two sons, Campbell and Alexander Scott. After five years of marriage, they divorced in 1965. Scott and Dewhurst gave their relationship a second chance and remarried on July 4, 1967. Their second marriage was divorced on February 2, 1972.
Dewhurst died of cervical cancer in 1991 , two days before she should have received the fourth Emmy of her career.
In 1997, Colleen Dewhurst's autobiography was published posthumously by Tom Viola.
Awards and honors
For her theater work, Dewhurst won a Tony Award in 1961 and 1974 and was nominated for a further six Tonys.
In 1986 and 1988, she won a Gemini Award for Best Supporting Actress on TV for her roles in Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel . In 1989 Dewhurst also won a Genie Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Merciless Hunt ( Hitting Home , 1987). In 1990 she was nominated for two Emmys and a Gemini Award for her role as Marilla Cuthbert in Das Mädchen aus der Stadt .
The Northern Westchester Center of the Arts Theater in Mount Kisco , New York, was renamed the Colleen Dewhurst Theater in her honor on October 20, 2001 .
