The girl from the city (original title: Road to Avonlea ) is a Canadian family series , which was based on the book of the same name by the writer Lucy Maud Montgomery between 1989 and 1996 in 7 seasons and 92 episodes.

Montreal , at the beginning of the 20th century: The half-orphan Sara Stanley is sent by her father, who has run into economic problems, to live with her aunts Hetty and Olivia in the small town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island . The conservative and strict Hetty and the open-minded Olivia gradually win Sara's trust. Sara is also slowly beginning to make friends in her cousin Felix and her cousin Felicity. Together they experience a carefree youth full of adventure.

The series made Sarah Polley famous overnight. The backdrop for the fictional city of Avonlea was created in Cavendish , Canada , also on Prince Edward Island. The series was produced by CBC and the Disney Channel .

In Germany, "Das Mädchen aus der Stadt" was first broadcast on January 4, 1997 on Super RTL . Since January 1, 2019, the series has been running on Bible TV under the title "Avonlea - The City Girl" .
