history
Disney Channel in the USA
As early as the spring of 1977, thought was given for the first time to an own transmitter, which was to be equipped with the programs and films from Walt Disney Productions . However, since the focus was placed on the Epcot amusement park at Walt Disney World Resort , the then Disney boss Card Walker rejected the idea.
The second attempt was made in 1982, and a joint venture with Group W was to be started. This did not happen, however, because the cooperation was terminated in September 1982 when there were disagreements regarding the creative direction and financial obligations, whereby Group W would have had to pay 50% of the start-up costs. So it came about that the station was now run solely by Walt Disney Productions and the first station boss Alan Wagner . In early 1983 the channel began to be announced.
Was started The Disney Channel on April 18, 1983 at 7:00 in the morning with the first of the Disney Channel produced broadcast Good Morning, Mickey!
In 1989 there were already five million people who had subscribed to the station. In 1991 it was proposed to the station that it should be offered in eight cable networks in addition to satellite transmission. In 1995, 15 million people were able to receive The Disney Channel.
In 1997, the station will start with a new design and changed the station name in Disney Channel that the attributable compensation. In some previews up to September 2002, however, the station was only referred to as Disney . In 2001 the station had 70 million satellite and cable subscribers.
Since May 23, 2014, the Disney Channel has also been broadcasting in the USA with the logo that has been used by the German version since January 17, 2014 during the day. The design is broadly in line with the German design.
Disney Channel in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
The German Disney Channel is an offshoot of the US Disney Channel. It started on pay TV on October 16, 1999 and, after a short break in broadcast, switched to free TV on January 17, 2014 , where it replaced Das Vierte and took over its distribution channels.
Disney Channel in the UK
The Disney Channel was planned to start in the United Kingdom as early as 1989. When the first previews of the station's launch on British Sky Broadcasting announced, the launch was postponed indefinitely for reasons unknown. Sky then filed a breach of contract lawsuit, which was later rejected.
On October 1, 1995, the station went on air as The Disney Channel and shared the slot with Sky Movie Gold .
On May 1, 1999, the station was the first European offshoot to introduce a new design, which was also used by the other offshoots from June 1999.
On March 15, 2003, the design of the US broadcaster was taken over.
In the spring of the same year, the station showed the last episodes of Hannah Montana and set a record number of viewers. The last episode all well that ends? With 621,000 viewers, it is still the most watched program or episode of a program of the UK branch.
On September 1, 2011, the logo was changed to the current version of Europe, and an HD version started 15 days later (September 15, 2011).
On June 1, 2012, the previous design was replaced by the almost identical American version. In the meantime, this has also been replaced by the current version with the new logo.
Disney Channel in the Netherlands and Flanders
The Disney Channel only started here on October 3, 2009 and is sometimes also referred to as Disney Channel Benelux , although the station cannot be seen in Luxembourg and Wallonia . As with competitor Nickelodeon , all programs are shown in Dutch before 8:00 p.m., after 8:00 p.m. the programs are shown in the original English language with Dutch subtitles, regardless of whether the program was dubbed or not. The new logo is now also broadcast in the Netherlands and Flanders.
Disney Channel in Spain
The Disney Channel started on April 17, 1998 and was initially shown on Spanish pay TV.
After Disney had taken over 20% of the Spanish cable network operator Net TV and the contract stated the possibility that one of two licenses could be used for a separate channel, the initiative was taken and the world's first and unique until the start of the new German branch Disney Channel, which can now be received on free TV. Fly Music , which was broadcast until June 30, 2008, was discontinued in favor of Disney Channel.
The then managing director Jose Vila assured that the program would remain the same and only advertisements would have to be shown so that the broadcaster had a source of income instead of the subscribers.
The start on free TV took place on July 1, 2008 and was accompanied by a large advertising campaign with the slogan Disney Channel, finally for everyone .
On May 1, 2010, the broadcast began in 16: 9 format, the international design was adopted on June 20, 2011. This has since been replaced, the current design is now also used here with the new logo.
Disney Channel in Turkey
The Turkish branch of the Disney Channel started on Pay TV on April 29, 2007 and is based in Istanbul . In October 2011, Disney decided to offer the Disney Channel for free on free TV from January 12, 2012. Since then, the station has been available unencrypted via the Türksat 4A satellite and via cable . The channel is financed through advertising . It is broadcast in the outdated 4: 3 image format . The new logo has now also been adopted in Turkey.
Disney Channel Europe
The branch in the Czech Republic , Romania , Bulgaria , Moldova , Hungary , Slovakia , Belarus , Kazakhstan , Russia and the Ukraine was designated as Disney Channel Europe .
The station replaced the station Jetix on September 19, 2009 , which on January 1, 2005 had replaced the Fox Kids station in turn. Fox Kids has been on the air in individual countries in the broadcasting area since February 1999.
The program was broadcast simultaneously in six languages ( Romanian , English , Bulgarian , Czech , Hungarian and Russian ). Advertising is an exception here; it is not broadcast in English.
There are now country-specific versions with Disney Channel România , Disney Channel България , Disney Channel Česká & Slovenská , Disney Channel Magyarország and Disney Канал Россия . With Disney Channel Украина there was also a country-specific version for Ukraine until January 1, 2013. It is not known how the reception situation is currently there.
Disney Channel România and Disney Channel България show the same program, but in their own language, the same applies to Disney Channel Česká & Slovenská and Disney Channel Magyarország .
In the meantime, every branch has adopted the new logo, Disney Канал Россия followed on August 1, 2014.
