action
The Wildcats are in their senior year at East High School. The film begins during the last basketball game that the Wildcats lag behind. During the break, Troy's father (Jack Bolton), the coach, makes it clear to the boys what the last game is about, after which the team fights again. The song "Now or Never" is played here. After Troy Jimmie, a new student, comes on and Troy has given him the decisive litter, the Wildcats and the entire team and other East High students celebrate at Troy's home. After a while, Troy and Gabriella go to Troy's old tree house and sing "Right Here, Right Now".
The next day, Sharpay announced that she was looking for an assistant for her appointments, whereupon the new student from England, Tiara Gold, got in touch with her, got the job and made all the preparations for Sharpay's day beforehand. Shortly afterwards, proclamations are made in class. Taylor names dates for the yearbook and the prom and Kelsi gives the list of participants in the spring musical. A little later it turns out that Kelsi registered the others in the musical without their consent. It is thanks to Gabriella's and Troy's attitudes that they join in anyway. Miss Darbus explains what the musical is supposed to be about: The final days of the students at East High. In this context, she also mentions that Sharpay, Ryan, Kelsi and Troy are candidates for a scholarship at the Julliard drama school in New York, although Troy had not even applied there.
Sharpay reacts annoyed during the lunch break because she wanted to get a role in the last musical without competition. To make Ryan understand what it's about, the two sing the song "I Want It All", which consists mainly of a dream sequence in which the two twins imagine what their life after school could be like. Sharpay also imagines her classmates as her subordinates. Before class the next day, Troy calls Gabriella up in the school's roof garden. There Gabriella Troy teaches the waltz for the prom while the two sing "Can I Have This Dance". Later in the cafeteria, Chad wants to ask Taylor to accompany him to the ball. After Taylor doesn't listen and Chad asks her out loud from a table, she agrees.
In the next scene the boys and girls are out to get their clothes. However, this scene goes over and becomes a rehearsal for the musical towards the middle. During shopping and rehearsals, “A Night to Remember” is sung by the cast. After the rehearsal, Sharpay tells Ryan that he should get the new song for Troy and Gabriella from Kelsi. He also does this by voluntarily inviting Kelsi to the prom. Shortly afterwards, Kelsi and Ryan sing the song "Just Wanna Be With You", which Troy and Gabriella continue to sing after about a third. Tiara learns that Gabriella has been accepted at Stanford University and is supposed to take part in a preparatory course for gifted students two weeks beforehand and would therefore miss the musical, among other things. As her assistant she tells this to Sharpay, who tells everyone about it so that Gabriella actually does it and Sharpay herself gets a bigger role than her own in the musical and can sing with Troy.
In the evening, Chad and Troy drive his broken car to the junkyard to get spare parts. There they remember their childhood and imitate scenes from their childhood while singing "The Boys Are Back".
The next morning at school, Sharpay tells Troy about Gabriella and her plan, so that he can also persuade her not to ignore this opportunity. And Sharpay's plan actually works, and Gabriella moves with her mother to Palo Alto , California, about 1,500 kilometers away , to study at Stanford University . During the preparations and the actual move, Gabriella sings "Walk Away". This makes everyone at East High sad, and the plans for the musical are not really making any headway either. When Gabriella calls in the evening that she wouldn't be back for prom, Troy is shocked and drives to East High to be able to react there. He does this in various parts of East High while singing "Scream".
When he arrives at the auditorium, he recognizes Miss Darbus, who explains to him that she has enrolled Troy at Julliard Drama School because she thought Troy would be comfortable on stage. Troy drives to Palo Alto overnight to surprise Gabriella there the next day and hold her own little prom, singing the rerun of "Can I Have This Dance". And in fact Troy manages to take Gabriella back with him for the musical.
When the performance begins, Troy and Gabriella are not back yet and Kelsi and Ryan begin the "Senior Year Spring Musical" with the ballad "Last Chance". Since Gabriella and Troy are still not there, Miss Darbus casts Sharpay as Gabriella, Tiara as Sharpay and Jimmie as Troy. The musical continues with the rerun of "Now or Never," which the East High basketball team and cheerleaders sing. Immediately afterwards Ryan sings "I Want It All" again with a few dancers. In the next scene in the musical, Sharpay begins "Just Wanna Be With You," unsuspecting that Jimmie will replace Troy. When Troy does not show up and Sharpay is already delaying the song, Jimmie suddenly comes to the balcony where the scene is set and Sharpay tries to escape from him because he has taken a perfume that she is allergic to. After the song, Sharpay leaves the stage angrily and sees Troy and Gabriella arriving. The two then finish the song. But when Sharpay wants to change clothes for her own role, she discovers Tiara in her dressing room, which she has betrayed so that she can play Sharpay and be the best actress at the school for the next few years. Tiara leaves the cloakroom for her appearance and Sharpay also changes. When Tiara has already started to sing the song "A Night to Remember", Sharpay comes onto the stage from above with the keyword "Surprise!" And fights for her role.
After the musical, Miss Darbus calls out the individual students and announces where they will go after school. It starts with Kelsi and Ryan, who both get scholarships at Julliard School. Next up is Sharpay, who announces that she will study at the University of Albuquerque and will assist Miss Darbus at East High so that Tiara does not get what she wanted. Chad will also go to the University of Albuquerque, where he will play on the Red Hawks basketball team. Gabriella will continue to go to Stanford and Troy decides to also go to a university in California, Berkeley, which is not far from Gabriella's, where he wants to learn both acting and basketball and also against the team by Chad will play. During the time, “We're All In This Together (Graduation Mix)” is sung in the background.
Finally, Troy gives the farewell speech when the certificates are awarded and afterwards all actors sing the piece "High School Musical". At the end of the film, the six main actors appear again and bow to the audience.
