action

Basketball player Troy Bolton is on winter vacation with his parents. On New Year's Eve, he attends a party where he and Gabriella Montez have to take part in a karaoke competition. After a hesitant beginning, they both cast off their shyness and sing the song Start of Something New together . After the performance, they exchange their cell phone numbers and two photos, but lose sight of each other.

When school starts again, Troy and Gabriella meet again because Gabriella's mother has been moved to a new company location and she is now attending the same school. Troy is the captain of the school's Wildcats basketball team , which has a chance for the championship. Traditionally, a winter musical is performed at school, the auditions of which are due soon. Both consider whether to take part, but decide against it. Despite this, Troy follows the casting as a spectator, but hides because he doesn't want his friends to know about their interest in the musical. Gabriella is also present at the casting. Meanwhile, the siblings Sharpay and Ryan sing the song What I've Been Looking For and seem to get the roles as there is no competition in the partner casting. Shortly before the end, Gabriella reports, so that Troy follows her on stage. The art teacher Ms. Darbus says, however, that the casting has already ended. Although she has already left the room, the two sing the same song on the piano accompanied by the composer of the musical, Kelsi, and thus convince Ms. Darbus to call a recall.

When it becomes known that the basketball team captain is trying something new, things get out of hand. Troy's best friend Chad fears the basketball team will break up, and Gabriella's friend Taylor McKessie, who runs the science club, also fears damage to her team if Gabriella takes part in the musical production. So Chad and Taylor decide to play Gabriella and Troy off against each other so that they give up their participation. Chad gets Troy to show singing in front of his teammates as unimportant and thereby speak out against Gabriella. This is transmitted via webcam to Taylor's laptop, which ensures that Gabriella notices. She then explains to the unsuspecting Troy that she will not sing with him.

But it turns out differently than the two wished, because Troy no longer shows any motivation for the basketball game, while Gabriella is also not preparing for the academic decathlon in which the science group wants to participate. So they choose to tell the truth. Gabriella, however, is still injured until Troy goes to her house and, when Gabriella lets her mother know that she has something to do, climbs onto her balcony and sings Start of Something New again .

Now both want to take part in the musical again and nothing could go wrong if it weren't for Sharpay: She sees her chances of this year's leading role dwindling and decides to do everything to ensure that Troy and Gabriella cannot attend the recall. After a brief conversation with Mrs. Darbus, she sets the date for the recall at the same time as the basketball final and the academic decathlon. But Sharpay did the math without Gabriella's and Troy's friends: Taylor manipulates the scoreboard during a basketball game so that the referees interrupt the event, and after Gabriella has mastered a discipline in the decathlon, they mix up a kind of stink bomb so that everyone has to leave the room.

And so the two of them find themselves back on stage and sing Breaking Free together . Gabriella's and Troy's friends come in droves and are thrilled. Sharpay and Ryan, who previously sang Bop to the Top , fail to prevail against Gabriella and Troy, which is why Troy and Gabriella get the roles in the musical. Eventually the scoreboard problem miraculously resolves, the game continues, and the Wildcats win. Gabriella's science team also wins. The film ends with a grandiose celebration in which the entire school sings and dances together in a performance of the song We're All in This Together .

background

After discussing the fact that Gabriella and Troy do not kiss in the film, film producer Bill Bordon announced that both would kiss or at least get very close in the final scene. However, the sharp kiss while was Editor intentionally removed to set higher expectations for the sequel to the film:

“We looked at all of the takes and thought it would be funnier if he didn't kiss her. There was a debate at Disney about this: 'What about the kiss?' In any case, there is a very romantic scene on the golf course in the second film in which the two will kiss. "

- Bill Bordon

Sequels

On August 17, 2007, the first sequel to the film, High School Musical 2, was released in the United States, starring the same leading actors. In Germany it was shown for the first time on free TV on October 13, 2007. The third part as a cinema version with the title High School Musical 3: Senior Year was shown in the cinema in 2008.

In March 2016, Disney Channel announced the production of High School Musical 4 .
