Renate Brauner (born October 23, 1956 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). She is deputy federal party leader of the SPÖ.

She was 2007-2015 Governor -Stellvertreterin and Deputy Mayor in Vienna. From 1996 to May 2018 she was the leading city councilor in Vienna.

Local politics

The graduate economist was a member of the district council of the 5th district of  Vienna , Margareten , from 1983 to 1990 , and from 1990 to 1996 a member of the Vienna State Parliament .

From 1996 to May 2018 she was a member of the city ​​senate and the state government as the current city councilor . From 1996 to 2004 she was responsible for integration, women's issues, consumer protection and personnel, and in 2001 she also took over responsibility for the fire brigade . From July 2004 to January 2007 she was the city councilor for health and social affairs.

After the retirement of the long-time city senate member Sepp Rieder , she became the city councilor for finances, economic policy and municipal utilities from January 22, 2007 (see provincial government and city senate Häupl IV ) and from 2007 to 2015 vice mayor of the city of Vienna , thus at the same time deputy governor of the State of Vienna.

From March 23, 2007, Brauner was also President of the Vienna Tourist Board . As city councilor, she resigned at the same time as Mayor Michael Häupl , and Peter Hanke succeeded her as financial and economic city ​​councilor on May 24, 2018 . After leaving the provincial government, she became the City of Vienna's agent for services of general interest and communal services, which was criticized as a supply post by political opponents. On June 19, 2018, she was succeeded by Peter Hanke as President of WienTourismus .

Party functions

From 1989 to 1994 she was state women's secretary of the SPÖ Vienna and from 1994 to 1996 state party secretary of the SPÖ Vienna . From 1998 to April 2009 she was chairwoman of the SPÖ Margareten.

Renate Brauner was chairwoman of the Vienna SPÖ women from 1997 to April 2019 and deputy chairwoman of the SPÖ's federal women's organization.

Until the state party conference on April 27, 2019, she was deputy state party leader of the Vienna SPÖ.

From 2001 to 2018 Brauner acted as president of the association “Die Helfer Wiens” (formerly the Viennese civil protection association ). Since 2005 she has been deputy chairwoman of the board of trustees of the SK Rapid Vienna football club .

Since November 16, 2011 she has been President of the Austrian Association of Public Economy and Community (VÖWG) . In this function she replaced Christian Oxonitsch .

Personal

Brauner was the former partner of the then young politician and later long-term mayor Michael Häupl (* 1949). According to media reports, the close friendship should have continued after the relationship ended.

Brauner was also regularly mentioned as a potential candidate when there was speculation about who could succeed Häupl, who served as mayor from 1994 to 2018.
