Michael Schnack

Michael Schnack (born May 10, 1967 in Iowa City , Iowa , USA ) is an American conductor , pianist , arranger , composer and professor at the Music and Art University of the City of Vienna .

Career

Michael Schnack learned piano with Amy Mulford, horn with Lee Witwer and choir accompaniment with Larry Monson. He also studied at Yale University (music, modern languages), the Gnessin Institute Moscow (choral conducting) and with Vladimir Minin from the Moscow Chamber Choir. Michael Schnack has lived in Vienna since 1990, where he acts as musical director of theater productions in Vienna and the surrounding area ( Chamber Opera , Volksoper , Volkstheater , Theater Akzent , Etablissement Ronacher , Metropol , Musical Sommer Amstetten , Open Air Festival Stockerau ). He is also involved in tours and other productions across Europe. He studied singing with Carol Blaickner-Mayo and Marie Landreth and was a singer in various choirs ( Arnold Schönberg Choir , Wiener Singverein , Wiener Kammerchor etc.). From 1995 Michael Schnack was artistic director of the Performing Arts Studios Vienna , which among other things offer three-year courses for musical students. Schnack also took over the management of choirs and small ensembles (jazz quartet etc.), song interpretation, repertoire, project work on musical scenes, coaching. Since 2016 he has been teaching as head of the musical class at the Vienna Conservatory.

As a composer Michael Schnack has created works of various genres, such as the musical Time Out! (Premiered in 2000 and revived in Stockerau in 2001 ), the music for Jura Soyfer's Broadway melody 1492 (Wiener Volkstheater, 2002), the musical Finix (premiered in 2003 at the Raimund Theater in Vienna , newly produced as a youth project of the European Union with performances in Bolzano, Trentino, Ljubljana and Vienna), the music for a total of eight satirical programs by Alfons Haider (1995-2003), or choral works such as Alleluia for soprano, choir, organ and orchestra (premiered in 2004 by the choir of the parish church of St. Stephan Tulln ) and Considerate lilia agri for Choir, organ and orchestra (world premiere in 2005 by the St. Stephan Choir, Tulln).
