Miss Jenn begins rehearsals for the musical with a reading sample with the cast. Nini tries to evade Ricky as she is not impressed that he auditioned to get closer to her rather than for the sake of the production. Nini criticizes Ricky for not taking production seriously, which leads him to think about quitting. However, Gina persuades Ricky to continue to take part in the musical, hoping that his romantic attempts will cause Nini to quit, which will allow her to take on the role of Gabriella. This fails when Nini is impressed with Ricky's newfound effort to practice the dance routines. EJ is jealous that Ricky will be cast as Troy. After suspecting that Ricky was texting Nini behind his back, he plans to steal Nini's phone and check her messages. Gina steals Nini's cell phone for EJ and offers him an alliance to help him remove Ricky from the musical so he can play Troy with Nini. Nini is late for rehearsals after Gina postponed the session. She knows that Nini didn't get the update because she couldn't find her phone. Nini is intimidated when Gina choreographs an intricate dance routine. Nini decides to steal some of Gina's belongings in retaliation for believing she stole her cell phone. EJ persuades Nini to return the items and writes a song for her, "A Billion Sorrys," when he realizes he has to admit his own actions after listening to the voicemail. Ricky reveals to Nini that EJ stole her cell phone. Meanwhile, Mr. Mazzara confronts Miss Jenn about the phone she purchased after finding a receipt for her purchase after she claimed it was a gift from one of the cast members in the original film. Mr. Mazzara confronts Miss Jenn when he finds out that she is just an extra in the movie and that she got her position at the school based on false claims that she had a bigger role. EJ tries to apologize, but Nini blocks his phone number and decides to break up with him. Ricky's mom returns home showing that she and his dad will split up and move to Chicago. Noticeably hurt by the news, Ricky plans to spend the night with Big Red. Since he cannot sleep with him, he decides to spend the night with them after talking to Carol, Nini's mother. Nini comforts Ricky and the two share a romantic moment before discovering that he has left the house. Nini laments the loss of their relationship and the emergence of feelings for Ricky by writing the song "All I Want" . Nini decides not to go to the homecoming dance and spend the night with Kourtney and Miss Jenn to keep her from thinking about their latest breakup. Miss Jenn tries to restore Nini's focus on production and encourages her to become more confident in a karaoke bar. Miss Jenn meets Ricky's father Mike during the night and a romantic bond develops between the two. Carlos helps Seb repeat the dance routine for "Bop to the Top" and the two decide that they will go to the upcoming dance together. Carlos is initially disappointed when Seb does not arrive, but the couple reconciles as he just arrives late. Gina takes EJ out to dance on her date, hoping the unwanted drama will force Nini to give up her role. Since this is not present, the plan cannot work. Ricky scolds Gina for taking advantage of EJ, and after he apologizes he drives her home and a connection is established. Miss Jenn searches her phone for missed calls and messages from Principal Gutierrez, who is arranging an urgent meeting because she is neglecting her supervisory duties for the dance.

They team up to stage a performance of the song "Truth, Justice and Songs in Our Key" at the school board meeting and to convince the jury to keep Miss Jenn busy. The presentation proves successful and Miss Jenn's suspension is withdrawn. At the meeting, Miss Jenn discovers that Mike is Ricky's father. Meanwhile, Nini becomes jealous of Ricky's newfound friendship with Gina when she sees him sing an acoustic version of “When There Was Me and You” for her . During the Thanksgiving vacation, Ashlyn throws a party for the musical cast at her home. Ricky calls his mother and finds out that she has a new relationship with another man. Gina feels connected to Ricky based on her own family struggles. Nini tries to connect with Gina at the party before Gina's mom calls to let her know that she has been transferred for work and that they will be moving again. Big Red gets closer to Ashlyn at the party when he learns she is the co-captain of the robot team. Ashlyn encourages Nini to write a song about herself, not their relationship, and gets her to compose Out of the Old and apply for a performing arts school in Denver. EJ notes that he lost a significant chunk of his social media followers after admitting his immoral behavior. Meanwhile, Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazzara unexpectedly meet at school that night to work on their respective extracurricular projects. The two support each other in their attempts and spend the rest of the night together at school. They fall asleep and watch a movie while a socket in the workshop lets sparks fly.

Thanks to the socket in the workshop, the theater caught fire. The group quickly finds a solution by finding an abandoned theater, the El Rey, where the show is supposed to take place, but Miss Jenn does not appeal to the idea of using the El Rey. Natalie Bagley, the director, has her wisdom teeth removed, so Big Red does it for her. Ashlyn advises him and the two continue to bond. As they unload into El Rey, EJ takes Miss Jenn's box of theater notes to see why he wasn't cast as Troy, much to Carlos's chagrin. He finds out that the reason he wasn't cast was because he "didn't have an emotional connection with the role". Nini reveals to Kourtney that she is considering applying to Denver Performing Arts School, but Kourtney isn't pleased. Miss Jenn admits to Ashlyn that she hates El Rey because at the premiere of the very first HSM movie in Utah, the only line she was supposed to say was cut out and consequently kicked out of the theater. Ricky and Nini go out to practice their text, so Miss Jenn asks EJ to fill in for Troy as a placeholder. As they rehearse, EJ is very emotional, which makes Carlos aware of what happened. As Nini and Ricky practice their text, they realize their past mistakes and are about to kiss until Big Red interrupts about them. Miss Jenn faints after being startled by a mannequin, and Lucas Grabeel, the actor who portrayed Ryan in the original film, appears in her dream. They play the song "Role of a Lifetime" which gives Miss Jenn the confidence to let go of the past. Kourtney eventually changes her mind and decides to phone the performing arts school on Nini's behalf.

At the premiere night of the production, EJ takes on the role of Troy Bolton for the second act. Eight hours beforehand, the theater students prepare for their first performance. Miss Jenn secures the East High gym for the show and asks Mr. Mazzara for equipment assistance. Ricky writes the song Just for a Moment for Nini. Meanwhile, Nini prepares how to give Ricky her present. Since both of them hesitate, neither of the two gives each other the planned gifts. Miss Jenn asks Kourtney if she will play Taylor since Gina has moved away. When Gina appears for the premiere, Kourtney offers her her role as Taylor for the song Stick to the Status Quo . Nini is excited when Kourtney told her that she had invited the dean of the Performing Art School. However, Nini is discouraged from being so excited. Ricky is happy that his parents came to the premiere. However, when he saw Lynn in the audience with her new boyfriend, he was unsettled during his performance on Get'cha Head in the Game . Then EJ is asked by Ricky to take over his role as Troy in the second act.
