Hans Carl Günther von Jagemann

Hans Carl Günther von Jagemann (born August 2, 1859 in Grottkau ; † January 21, 1926 ) was a professor of German studies at Harvard University . He was President of the Modern Language Association and co-editor of Modern Language Notes .

His parents were the Prussian major general Hans Karl Wilhelm von Jagemann (1814–1874) and his second wife Julie Ingermann (1821–1860).

Life

He got his education at the grammar school in Naumburg and then attended the universities in Leipzig and Tübingen . In 1881 he went to America and studied at the newly formed Johns Hopkins University . After graduating, he received his doctorate there in 1884. He then went to Earlham College as a professor of new languages , in 1886 he moved to the Indiana University Bloomington as professor of Germanic languages , from there he went to Harvard University in 1889, where he taught as professor of Germanic philology. In 1913 von Jagemann was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In the summer of 1925 he resigned because of a serious illness from which he had suffered at least since 1905. Although he published a few books, he always saw himself as an academic teacher.

Jagemann married on June 10, 1884 Frances Abbie Whitmann , a daughter of the merchant Seymour Whitman (born August 15, 1805, † March 11, 1856) from Williamstown .
