Disney + (pronounced Disney Plus ) is an over-the-top - online video store - and Video-on-Demand Service from Disney .

history

On September 12, 2019, two months before the official launch, the beta test began in the Netherlands, where users could download the streaming service's app for free. It turned out that in addition to the previously confirmed content, various short films from the Disney archive, Marvel trick series from the 1970s to 1990s as well as bonus material for many films will be part of the offer. Each user received up to seven accesses per subscription , of which a maximum of four could be streamed at the same time. It was also possible to download media in three quality levels, with up to 51 hours of image material being possible on the lowest level. On November 12, 2019, the beta version was taken offline in the Netherlands and the paid version was released as well as in the United States and Canada.

The service has been available in several European countries including Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom and Switzerland since March 24, 2020. In Germany, the service started with a reduced bit rate in the wake of the high load on the Internet expected from the COVID-19 pandemic. In France, the start of the service has been postponed to April 7, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the flow of the Internet. From September 15, 2020, the service will also be available in Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

In August 2020, Bob Chapek announced that Disney + has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide.

reception

The start of the streaming service was viewed critically on Moviepilot : Disney + heralded “the end of heavenly conditions” on the streaming market. With providers like Netflix it became possible to receive a variety of content from different providers through a subscription. However, Disney + relies on exclusivity and exclusion, which worsens the conditions for consumers. These would now have to take out several subscriptions, waive them, or would be driven into illegality . Dietmar Dath criticizes the increasing global market power of the Disney group in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : "With the streaming provider 'Disney +' he wants to advance his integration of production, distribution and exploitation into the unprecedented." Nicolas Freund says in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that by the launch of Disney + “makes streaming even more complicated”. Although more and more film material is being produced and available due to the increasing streaming offer, this also means that more and more offers are becoming relevant to a person. This leads to confusion, since constantly "switching subscriptions is annoying and simply subscribing to everything" is "not an option for most viewers" due to the price. By primarily making old content available on Disney +, Freund recognizes that there are advantages for both consumers and providers: While viewers no longer need “the DVD shelf”, Disney can count on constant income.
