Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an American computer animated series , which in the fictional Star Wars universe of George Lucas plays and the events between Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith describes . She is content related to the older, almost eponymous animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars , and is one of the plot revision of the franchise 'by Disney, as opposed to Star Wars: Clone Wars , still the official Star Wars - canon .

On July 19, 2018, Dave Filoni announced that the series would return for a seventh and final season. It consisted of twelve episodes and launched on Disney + on February 21, 2020.

A sequel series called Star Wars: The Bad Batch was announced on July 13, 2020 and is set to launch on Disney + in 2021.

action

The galaxy is threatened by the war of the Galactic Republic with separatists, the so-called Confederation of Independent Systems (CUS). This conflict takes place in all parts of the Republic, with Jedi Knights , along with clone warriors, facing the droids controlled by Sith.

The series does not tell a continuous story, but rather self-contained episodes from the life of the warring parties, although some storylines extend over several episodes.

The main story of the first season was the war and the heroic adventures of the Republic forces and Jedi Knights. Season two darkened the tone of the series and made it more serious with the introduction of the bounty hunters, hired mercenaries who also serve primarily as the hired commanders of the separatist droids. Ahsoka Tano's development also played a bigger role. The third, fourth and fifth seasons were presented in a similarly serious tone. The sixth and, for the time being, final season then closed most of the storylines, but left a few open. The sixth season made few hints of the movie Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith . The seventh and at the same time final season is getting closer to the film and ends with the dissolution of the Galactic Republic and with it the end of the Clone Wars.

From the end of the first season onwards, popular characters from the “Extended Universe” of Star Wars , the area of merchandise media that are based on the film canon, but have so far mostly presented independent stories and characters, appeared For example, the Jedi Quinlan Vos, who became famous in the Clone Wars comics, and the bounty hunter Aurra Sing, as well as the clone elite team Delta Squad, made famous through the video game Star Wars: Republic Commando . With the triple episode series “Kidnapped”, “Slaves of the Republic” and “Escape from Kadavo” of the fourth season, a comic title from the extended universe was adapted for the mainstream for the first time .

The consequences of the series The Powers of Fate take place at different times, so that a list in the table is not meaningful. Also not listed miniseries, short stories, comics, books and other ancillary works of the official Star Wars - canon and the theme park Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge (between VIII and IX). The fictitious calendar of the Star Wars universe is used for the schematic classification of the actions . This differentiates between the years before the Battle of Yavin (VSY) and after the Battle of Yavin (NSY). The Battle of Yavin IV marks the end of Star Wars (1977), in which Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance destroy the first Death Star .

Charisma

United States

In the United States, the series began broadcasting on Cartoon Network on October 4, 2008 with a double episode. There the series always ran on Friday evenings. Over time, she took several weeks of breaks through holidays such as Halloween and Christmas . The Clone Wars had the most-viewed series premiere in the station's entire history. The second season began broadcasting on October 2, 2009 and the third season also started on September 17, 2010 with a double episode. At the end of March 2012, Cartoon Network had announced the production of a fifth season at the Upfronts, which could be seen from September 29, 2012 to March 2, 2013.

The Star Wars creator George Lucas planned to bring the series to over 100 episodes in 4 or 5 seasons and if the ratings should drop and the series could not find a new TV channel to broadcast, it should continue to be produced as direct-to-DVD .

On March 11, 2013, Lucasfilm announced the series would officially end, at least on Cartoon Network. Though storylines remained open, production of The Clone Wars for Star Wars Rebels has been discontinued. In October 2013, producer Dave Filoni announced that the already finished episodes for the suspended sixth season - collectively titled "The Lost Missions" - will be broadcast in spring 2014. The entire sixth season was released on Netflix on March 7, 2014 .

In July 2018 it was confirmed that there will be twelve new episodes for the series. These were produced for the Disney + streaming service .

Germany

In Germany, the first season as well as part of the second season was still broadcast on ProSieben's Sunday evening program until it transferred The Clone Wars into the program of the subsidiary channel , Kabel eins . There the series always ran in single episodes on Saturday mornings. From January 7, 2011, the series was also on Super RTL in the program, where weekly feature film versions were broadcast, which were composed of several episodes.

The German pay-TV broadcaster Cartoon Network broadcasts the series in double episodes (repeat of the previous week and the next episode) on Saturday evening, just like in the USA.

Due to an error in the contracts with ProSieben on the part of Lucasfilm, the broadcasting order in Germany was briefly changed, which meant that the episode "The invisible enemy" was left out for two weeks and the two-parter "Das Virus" / "The Secret of the Moons" was brought forward. The first couple of episode descriptions in the series were mistakenly taken from the micro-series Star Wars: Clone Wars . This bug was not fixed until episode nine.

On January 16, 2014, Super RTL announced on its press page that it would broadcast the 6th season in German-language and worldwide premieres from February 15, 2014. The episodes were broadcast on four Saturday evenings.

The seventh season was released in German-speaking countries for the German start of Disney +.

advertising

In addition to commercials that run on television in Germany and the USA alike, there is a separate trailer for each episode on the English Star Wars website, in the form of a weekly newsreel, as we know it from cinemas during the Second World War in the episode guide with a complete plot, list of speakers, scenes, concept drawings, quotes and trivia as well as a short webcomic with approx. 6 to 10 pages per issue, which is somewhat related to the episode. For example, one learns that the planet on which the Toydarian king wants to meet Yoda is not Toydaria, but an uninhabited, neutral moon. Marginal notes are also placed in the foreground, such as the losses in the battle for traps from "The Fall of a Droid". Since the second season, however, the plot is independent of the episodes. This is how the life of the Padawan Tyzen Xebec after the death of his master Bolla Ropal is dealt with in “Act on Instinct”. In addition, the design of the episode guide has been changed significantly since the beginning of season 3: Although all the people who appear are now listed and more background information is available, the plot and the quotes from the episode are no longer listed.

Merchandise

As with the pilot, there are also various toys, books and comics for the series. The books and comics tell stories, completely independent of the series. The toy figures and building sets from Lego, on the other hand, sometimes relate to a specific episode of the series, so you can find out something about the episodes in advance. For example, there is a kit from Ahsoka's Jedi starfighter, which was only seen in the episode "Storm over Ryloth". There are also three video games: "Jedi Alliance" ( Nintendo DS ), "Lightsaber Duels" ( Wii ) and "Republic Heroes" ( Windows , Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 , Wii, PlayStation Portable , PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS ). The game "Lightsaber Duels" deals with selected duels from the series, which are not sorted according to broadcast, but according to production code. For example, the Malevolence trilogy was broadcast before the episode "Battle of the Droids", but since "Battle of the Droids" is the sixth episode according to the production, this level comes before the Malevolence levels (episodes 7, 9 and 11).

In addition, a continuation of the successful Lego Star Wars video game series, all about the events of The Clone Wars , was launched in spring 2011 . It is entitled "Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars" (Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Wii, Mac OS and Nintendo DS).

Trivia

  • In the original version, the characters are mostly spoken by different actors than in the films, with a few exceptions such as Matthew Wood (General Grievous), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Daniel Logan (young Boba Fett), Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn), Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks) and Pernilla August (Shmi Skywalker).
  • The astromech droid R2-KT pays homage to Katie Johnson, the daughter of the founder of the 501st Legion in the USA, who died of an inoperable brain tumor in 2005 at the age of seven .
  • The episode Bounty Hunter is a dedication to Akira Kurosawa , one of George Lucas' idols, and his film The Seven Samurai .
  • The episodes weren't broadcast in the same order in which they were produced, but in the order that Cartoon Network bought them. So the story sometimes jumps back and forth like in the episodes The Invisible Enemy and Cat and Mouse , which take place before the movie. With season 3, the story about the soldiers of the Rishi outpost from the episode Recruits was expanded, and the battle of Ryloth is shown again in supply routes , which also created the context for the episode The Ambush (Season One, Episode One).
  • Some of the various extraterrestrials in the series have special accents in the original English language as language features. For example, the Twi'leks have a French, the Lurmen an Irish, Neimoidians an East Asian, Dr. Nuvo Vindi has a German accent, General Whorm Loathsom has a Scottish accent and General Grievous has a heavy Russian accent. Only Grievous' strong pronunciation was retained in the German versions. The Neimoidians were given a French accent so they wouldn't conflict with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace , as they had the same setting there. By using the French accent with the Neimoidians, any accent for the Twi'leks had to be omitted, and with the Lurmen there were also no special pronunciation features.
  • In the episode Bounty Hunters , director Dave Filoni takes on a role in the series for the first time. He lends his voice to the bounty hunter Embo. In addition, the extravagant hat, like the headgear of the bounty hunter Cad Bane, is similar to the director's hat.
  • Sometimes there are references to the Indiana Jones film series, also co-developed by George Lucas , such as the staff of Ra as a walking stick for Senator Kharrus from The Ryloth , the Ark of the Covenant as one of the treasures that Wat Tambor takes away for Ryloth , and to the Houses in The Secret of the Moons , on which “Crystal Skulls” was written with graffiti. In the episode Friend or Foe , Cad Bane finds a matching hat in a pawn shop, but first he picks up a fedora felt hat like Henry Jones Jr. ("Indy") wears in all films.
  • The name of Senator Halle Burtoni von Kamino, who appears in the episodes The Duchess of Mandalore, Murder in the Senate, Heroes On Both Sides and The Pursuit of Peace , is an obvious allusion to the US corporation Halliburton , which was involved in the Iraq war has come under fire.
  • The name of Senator Mee Deechi, who appears in the episodes of Murder in the Senate and The Pursuit of Peace , is an allusion to the Medici family, who were one of the most influential families in Florence in the 15th and 16th centuries .
  • On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back , bounty hunters Boba Fett and Bossk appear in the season finale of the second season.
  • Also appearing are Wullf Yularen and Wilhuff Tarkin, who appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope .
  • The saying "I have a really bad feeling there" that occurs in all Star Wars films is also taken up in several episodes in The Clone Wars .
  • The Imperial March can be heard in some episodes, mostly during battles and dramatic moments in the fifth and sixth seasons.
  • Since the seventh season was only produced a few years after the Lucasfilm takeover by Disney and since other film and television productions have since emerged, characters from these can be found in this. So one sees Kanan Jarrus from Star Wars Rebels , here still in his identity as Caleb Dume, as a young Padawan at the side of his master Deepa Bilaba. Sabine Wren's mother Ursa, also a character from Rebels, and Dryden Vos from Solo: A Star Wars Story also appear.
  • The final four episodes of the seventh season play parallel to Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith . One sees Anakin and Obi-Wan being called to Coruscant to rescue the Chancellor, one learns of Count Dooku's death and Obi-Wan's mission to Utapau, one sees the meeting between Yoda, Mace Windu and Aayla Secura, as well as the execution of the order 66 as seen by Ahsoka and Rex.

Novels for the series

Sequels

As a result of the discontinuation, the comic miniseries Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir (German: Darth Maul - Sohn Dathomirs , ISBN 978-3-7416-0268-9 ) appeared in 2014 , with Jeremy Barlow as the writer and Juan Frigeri as the draftsman. In 2015, however, the novel Dark Disciple, written by Christie Golden , was published (German: Schülerin der Dunklen Seite , ISBN 978-3-7341-6106-3 ). Both publications were based on scripts from the series that were no longer used. And both are part of the new canon. The series Star Wars Rebels , produced by Disney , was also released from 2014 to 2018 , which is set years later, but continues characters and stories from The Clone Wars .
