Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (or Rogue One for short) is an American science fiction film from 2016 and the first feature film in the A Star Wars Story series of the Star Wars saga . He describes the prehistory to Star Wars . At the center of the plot is a group of rebels whosacrifice their lives to stealthe blueprints for an imperial super weapon known as the Death Star . In Germany, the film opened on December 15, 2016. Based on global box office earnings , Rogue One was the second most financially successful film of 2016 .

The film is stylistically different from previous films in the Star Wars universe. So has Rogue One bonds of war films and thus gives greater weight to the " Wars " (war) in the title. It is also unusual for a Star Wars film that almost all protagonists die in the film. Furthermore, the "power" is only rarely discussed and the " Jedi Knights" do not have such a prominent position as moral authority as in the core saga.

The title Rogue One is the call sign of the rebels, which they spontaneously come up with at the request of the control center of the rebel base when they want to make their way to Scarif without permission. Rogue is English and has various translations (mostly "rogue"; in The Empire Strikes Back "Rogue Squadron" was translated as " Renegade Squadron" ).

action

Six years after the seizure of power by the Galactic Empire: Former scientist Galen Erso living as a farmer and his wife Lyra and their daughter Jyn on a remote planet, ends up when one day the imperial officer Orson Krennic with his guard squad to the former weapons Bauer to win again for the empire. Galen, who suspected this arrival, instructs his family to get to safety so that Krennic can fake a lonely life after the supposed death of his wife. The lie, however, is exposed when Lyra returns to defend her husband. While she is killed in the following exchange of fire and Galen has to rejoin the Empire, Jyn is able to successfully hide from the Imperial soldiers in a cave, where she is later rescued by the rebel leader Saw Gerrera, who raises her.

Fifteen years later, Bodhi Rook, a defected Imperial pilot, smuggled a message from Galen telling of an Imperial super weapon. The news reaches Saw Gerrera, who now lives on the desert moon Jedha. However, Saw Gerrera radicalized himself in the wake of the rebellion and renounced the Alliance, and he does not trust Rook. Jyn, who has since fought as a criminal under an assumed name, is captured by the Empire and taken to a prison labor camp, but is freed by a small group of rebels during a transport. Since they recognize the daughter of Galen Erso in Jyn, they want to use her to contact Gerrera. Since the news from Galen did not get through to the rebellion, they want to get to the details via Gerrera. What Jyn doesn't know is that the rebels want to kill Galen Erso to stop the superweapon from being built.

Jyn, rebel officer Cassian Andor and his reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO arrive on Jedha where an armed uprising against the Empire takes place. With the help of the blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe and the assassin Baze Malbus, they find Saw Gerrera, who is holding Rook prisoner. Gerrera shows Jyn the hologram message in which Galen asks his daughter for forgiveness and tries to explain his involuntary help with the Empire's project. The hologram also shows that Galen has built a weak point in the reactor of the weapon known as the Death Star, which can lead to all systems failing in one fell swoop. He also says that the Death Star plans are hidden in a closely guarded Imperial base on the tropical planet Scarif.

Meanwhile, on the Death Star, Governor Tarkin questions Krennic's competence and ability to complete the construction of the Death Star. As a demonstration of the weapon’s effects, Krennic lets the Death Star fire at Jedha. Jyn escapes in time with Cassian, K-2SO, Îmwe, Malbus and Rook, but they have to leave Saw Gerrera behind. In the frantic escape, Jyn forgets to take her father's recording with her, and since Gerrera dies herself, she is the only witness to the news. On the Death Star, Tarkin is impressed by its destructive power, which has wiped out the entire capital Jedha with just a few reactor ignitions. He recognizes Krennic, who has committed several security violations in the course of the construction, but takes over the management of the project and takes it over himself.

Believing that they would save her father, Jyn reports the recording to the others aboard her escape ship. Cassian, however, does not believe her and secretly wants to continue to obey orders to kill Galen Erso. With a hint in Erso's hologram message, they fly to Eadu, where the empire's secret research facility is established. There the group goes in search of Erso and finds him on a platform where he is facing Orson Krennic. He found out that an Imperial defector had smuggled information out of the facility. At first Krennic suspects Ersos engineers. When he threatens her, however, Erso confesses and stands protectively in front of his employees. These are nevertheless executed by Krennic's soldiers. Meanwhile, Jyn was able to sneak onto the platform and Cassian to position himself with his sniper rifle. However, the rebel does not have the heart to kill Galen Erso. Just as Krennic is about to hold Erso accountable, a squadron of rebel fighters starts an attack on the platform. Krennic escapes, Galen Erso is seriously injured and dies in the arms of his daughter, who is urged to flee by Cassian shortly afterwards.

Now that Galen is dead, but the space station is already operational, Jyn proposes a plan to steal the Death Star's plans. However, since both her father and Gerrera are dead and the hologram has been destroyed, the majority of the rebel council does not believe her story, while the majority of the rest see themselves militarily defeated because of the ready-to-use Death Star. Frustrated by the inaction, Jyn, Cassian, K-2SO, and a band of rebel soldiers steal a captured Imperial space shuttle. They call themselves “Rogue One” and, disguised as imperials, make their way to Scarif to steal the Death Star's plans, which reveal the weak point built by Erso. While the trio searches the base for the data, the rest of the team tries to distract the garrison's imperial stormtroopers with the help of explosions in the area. A heavy battle ensues, in which the stormtroopers are supported by imperial ruffs. The fleet of the Rebel Alliance arrives in orbit around Scarif, as they have now decided to help. However, the planet is protected by a strong shield: only a few space fighters manage to penetrate the protective sluice before the shield is closed. You are now supporting the rebel soldiers of Rogue One against the Imperial ruffs. The rebel fleet in orbit must defend itself against a number of TIE fighters and star destroyers while trying to take down the shield.

Jyn and Cassian, in Imperial uniforms, can use K-2SO to gain access to the base's data chamber. When the intrusion is noticed, the droid locks the two in the chamber and defends the entrance until it is destroyed by the overwhelming force of the stormtroopers. Jyn is able to locate the blueprint and take it, but Krennic and his soldiers attack her and Cassian. Cassian is hit and falls several meters in the shaft of the archive onto a platform. Jyn escapes upstairs to transmit the data to the space fleet, but finds that the signal cannot penetrate the planet's shield. At Chirrut Îmwe's lifespan, a signal can be sent to the fleet, instructing them to turn off the shield immediately. The Mon Calamari fleet commander Raddus then orders a hammerhead corvette to ram an already incapacitated Star Destroyer and push it onto another, causing it to crash into the shield and overload its deflectors. The tactic works and the Death Star's plans can be sent to the rebel fleet. Meanwhile, Jyn is caught by Krennic. Before he can shoot her, he is shot down by Cassian, who despite his injury was able to follow Jyn. Together they flee the facility and leave Krennic behind.

Tarkin decides to use the Death Star to destroy the Imperial base on Scarif in order to end the battle. The explosion kills all rebels and imperials who had survived the battle on the ground to date - including Jyn, Cassian and Krennic.

With the plans, the rebel fleet wants to jump into hyperspace, but is intercepted by a squad under Darth Vader. The Alliance command ship is disabled and boarded. The transferred plans can be brought to the now fleeing corvette Tantive IV of Princess Leia Organa just in time before Vader reaches them. When asked by Captain Raymus Antilles what these plans would be and what they would mean, Leia replies: "Hope".

Classification in the Star Wars universe

chronology

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first offshoot film of the Star Wars universe that has its plot apart from the main trilogies. The prologue of the film takes place about six years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith , at the end of which the galactic empire under the leadership of the Emperor and his disciple, Darth Vader , took control of most of the worlds of the galaxy Has. The main plot takes place 13 years later and ends just before the events of Star Wars (1977), in which the achievements of the rebels from Rogue One were first read in the scrolling text at the beginning of the film.

Several characters who have previously appeared in other Star Wars films can also be seen in Rogue One . These include short appearances by Dr. Evazan , Ponda Baba , General Dodonna , R2-D2 , C-3PO and Bail Organa . Unused archive footage for Star Wars was prepared and used for rebel pilots Garven Dreis and Jon Vander . The leader of the Rebel Alliance, Mon Mothma , is played by Genevieve O'Reilly , who already filmed scenes in this role for Revenge of the Sith (2005), which were not used for the final cut. Princess Leia Organa also has a brief appearance for which the face of 19-year-old Carrie Fisher was adapted to the movement of Ingvild Deila with the help of computer technology and performance capture . With the help of the same technology, albeit for a significantly larger role, Peter Cushing, who died in 1994, was digitally adapted in his role as Governor Tarkin to the representations of Guy Henry . Darth Vader also plays a prominent role, whose dubbing voice in the original English, as in all previous films, is again from James Earl Jones . With Saw Gerrera , a character from one of the canonical animation series was also seen in a feature film for the first time. There are also several references to the Rebels animated series . One scene shows the droid C1-10P "Chopper" and the spaceship Ghost in the background and General Syndulla is proclaimed in the rebel base.

The film received mostly positive reviews. It was able to convince 85% of the 347 critics on Rotten Tomatoes and achieved 7.8 out of 10 possible stars on IMDb with over 502,000 reviews (as of December 23, 2019). The dark and serious atmosphere and the impressive special effects were particularly praised.

The journalist Holger Kreitling classified the film in the daily newspaper Die Welt as “Episode 3.9. A short story, an apocryphal novella , news from the central galaxy, everyone knows how it ends. […] With little effort, under the cultural radar and with the benevolence of the studio moguls, raw materials could be tried, experiments with violence and broken but strong heroines invented. It wasn't about prestige, but rather simple and sometimes subversive aesthetic strategies. 'Rogue One' is a very expensive B-Picture , a genre variation towards a war film. ”According to Andreas Borcholte on Spiegel Online ,“ the mood is darker than usual. It is true that there are always breathtaking show values and well-dosed gags and references that should please the fan heart. Nevertheless, 'Rogue One' is closer to the war film genre than the fantasy. ”With regard to the FSK rating, he adds:“ The body count is astonishingly high for a family blockbuster approved for ages 12 and up. ”Daniel Krüger suspects in the magazine Musikexpress in Regarding the effect of the “dark and morally questionable” characters, after the film “you will have to explain to younger viewers what actually distinguishes the hero group from terrorists. After all, they work with assassinations, explosive traps and house-to-house fighting. In case of doubt, the new heroes choose the martyr's death and trigger a loss-making battle with a kamikaze action. "

The journalist Tobias Kniebe criticizes in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the “concept on which the film is based is generally sick. You couldn't take away from everyone involved the feeling of only working in a kind of sideline while the big story continues elsewhere. Especially with the script, it seems as if the authors have filled in the remaining blanks more or less listlessly, roughly like painting by numbers. ”For Dirk Peitz of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , Rogue One is“ in many ways ”the“ perhaps most convincing Star Wars -Film that has been shot so far ”, because it uses“ the dramaturgical freedom not to have to advance the plot of the saga ”and entangle the narrative patterns anew.

The culture editor Tim Caspar Boehme criticizes the cast and their acting in the taz to the effect that “Felicity Jones remains too formulaic and pale as the central star of the plot to convincingly embody the drama and fighting spirit of Jyn. The majority of the other figures appear to be very contourless, which makes them unsuitable as veritable sidekicks. And even the dark Darth Vader, the only one on the road with a lightsaber this time, looks like a clone of himself. ”For Carsten Baumgardt from the online portal Filmstarts, the“ interchangeable dirty dozen ”almost looks like “ when the ensemble was put together Worldwide marketability was the top priority and not the narrative logic. "Denis Krick, however, praised in the Nordwest-Zeitung that the new characters would" exude the original charm of the series, which one in the last sequel 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' so sorely missed. Instead of young copies of old heroes and villains, there are now again original types with corners, edges and without lightsabers. "

Director Gareth Edwards

For Marks Tschiedert from Augsburger Allgemeine , the film's greatest strengths are its continuity and “obsession with detail. The way backdrops, costumes and creatures were reconstructed here in such a way that hardly any differences can be determined from the film that sparked the 'Star Wars' fever at the end of the seventies is always astonishing. "

“This 'Rogue One' Star Wars episode is awesome as an opulent screen show and as a hurray ideology to be feared. But: We are in the cinema, this unique entertainment temple, and because director Gareth Edwards and his team know how to assemble this warlike 3D fiction keyboard so brilliantly technically, optically and artistically, one succumbs to the visual propaganda 'wars' -Charm and can be taken by surprise. "

“Director Gareth Edwards celebrates a successful debut in the 'Star Wars' universe. 'Rogue One' has everything that inspires young and old fans: science fiction, action, humor and the heart in the right place. With its story, which is consistently narrated to the end, the Walt Disney Group also provides evidence that it not only produces easily digestible food for children. "
