Hal T. Hickel is an American film technician who specializes in visual effects and works for Industrial Light & Magic .

Life

At the age of twelve, Hickel wrote a letter to Lucasfilm with sketches of ideas for a sequel to A New Hope , for which he received a polite refusal from producer Gary Kurtz . Today the letter hangs on the wall of Hickel's office at ILM . 20 years later, Hickel found himself working on Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace as the lead animator. Hickel began his career at Pixar Animation in 1994 , where he worked on Toy Story and several other Pixar short films. When he heard that a new Star Wars trilogy was in preproduction, he switched to Industrial Light & Magic and from then on he worked on Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and finally on Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones where he was responsible for moving the droidekas.

His other films include: AI - Artificial Intelligence , Space Cowboys , Dreamcatcher and Van Helsing . In 2007, Hickel won the BAFTA Award and the Oscar for Best Visual Effects along with John Knoll , Charles Gibson and Allen Hall for Pirates of the Caribbean 2 .
