Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC is an American film, games, and television production company headquartered in San Francisco , California . The company was founded by George Lucas in 1971 and is considered one of the most important and famous production companies that revolutionized cinema since the mid-1970s. With a few exceptions, the company has been concentrating (especially since 2012) on the Star Wars and Indiana Jones brands . In October 2012, the company was sold to Disney for $ 4.05 billion.

history

Lucasfilm was founded in 1971 by George Lucas. Little by little, seven subsidiaries emerged, which together form the actual group today. The company name Lucasfilm corresponds to a division of the same name .

In 1986 Lucasfilm sold the original animation division Lucasfilm Graphics Groups, which was launched as a project at Industrial Light and Magic, to Steve Jobs . He expanded it into a company and now exists as Pixar Animation Studios , which have produced films such as Finding Nemo , Toy Story and Die Monster AG . Like Lucasfilm, Pixar is now part of the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group at Disney.

The entire Lucasfilm corporation was sold to The Walt Disney Company in October 2012 for $ 4.05 billion . The previous sole owner of the group, George Lucas, justified this step with the fact that he wanted an appropriate transition for his successor while he was still alive.

The Indiana Jones and Star Wars sagas were created by the group .

Kathleen Kennedy is the new president of the company .

Divisions

In addition to the Lucasfilm division, which is also the namesake of the entire group, the group includes the following divisions:

LucasArts

LucasArts was founded in 1982 under the previous name Lucasfilm Games and is a developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software.

Titles published by LucasArts include Maniac Mansion , The Secret of Monkey Island , Grim Fandango and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, as well as franchises including Star Wars Battlefront, Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones and The Force Unleashed.

In development centers in San Francisco and Singapore, LucasArts works closely with the Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm Animation and Skywalker Sound divisions.

On April 3, 2013 it was announced that as part of a restructuring by Disney, all ongoing projects will be discontinued and almost all employees will be laid off. In the future, LucasArts will only serve as a licensor for Star Wars games instead of developing them itself.
