action

Sarah, a 15-year-old teenager, feels treated unfairly by her father and stepmother and takes refuge in the fantasy world of a book. One day she is supposed to act as a babysitter for her little half-brother Toby. Since Toby is whining and nothing can be calmed down, Sarah is quickly overwhelmed with the situation, and she impulsively wishes that goblins could fetch the baby - which then happens promptly and she regrets shortly afterwards. The baby Toby is gone, but the goblin king Jareth appears. No pleading and begging can help persuade him to give Toby back. But he gives her 13 hours to free the little one from his castle, which is surrounded by a huge labyrinth. Otherwise, Jareth will turn Toby into a goblin.

The way to the castle "beyond the real world" leads through an enchanted labyrinth full of dangers, wonders and strange beings: talking rocks, wild monsters, helping and talking hands, mysterious doors, playful fire trolls, insidious root weights and the "moor of the eternal stench" . But in this labyrinth Sarah not only finds obstacles, but also new friends who help her to cope with the many difficulties encountered in her rescue operation.

background

  • The film was inspired by the books by Maurice Sendak and Lewis Carroll , which you see in Sarah's room at the beginning. Some scenes in the labyrinth are based on various pictures by MC Escher , a print of relativity hangs in Sarah's room.
  • The production was carried out by George Lucas ; The visual effects also came from his effects forge Industrial Light & Magic .
  • In several scenes, the goblin king Jareth plays with one or more crystal balls. The techniques shown are simple elements of contact juggling , and the hand - seen in these scenes - does not belong to David Bowie , but to performance artist Michael Moschen .
  • The film, which flopped at the time, is a timeless bestseller and now has a large fan base. The book "Goblins of the Labyrinth" (by the designer Brian Froud) has been reissued for the 20th anniversary.
  • Based on the film, Lucasfilm Games (now LucasArts ) released Labyrinth, its first adventure game , which was one of the first more complex graphic adventure games ever.
  • While the instrumental film music (Sarah, Hallucination, The Goblin Battle, Thirteen O'Clock, Home at Last) was contributed by Trevor Jones , the sung pieces by David Bowie (Underground, Magic Dance, Chilly Down, As the World Falls Down, Within You).
  • Gates McFadden , who later played a leading role in Starship Enterprise , was the choreographer for this film. Among other things, she worked out the ball sequence and the battle in the goblin city.

criticism

“Partly imaginative and humorous, partly sluggish mixture of puppet animation and real film; the interest is mainly kept awake by the bizarre dolls and their sometimes rude pranks. "

“Journey into the Labyrinth is [...] a fabulous film about a young girl's journey into femininity using modern technology to illuminate a mythical-style story. It is a remarkable achievement in many ways. "
