life and career

Childhood and work as a child model

Jennifer Connelly was born in the Catskill Mountains on December 12, 1970, to clothing manufacturer Gerard Connelly and antique dealer Ilene . Her paternal family is of Irish and Norwegian descent. Her mother's ancestors were Russian - Polish Jews . She grew up in Brooklyn neighborhood Brooklyn Heights , where she attended art-oriented private school Saint Ann's. In 1976 the family moved to Woodstock . Four years later, the Connellys returned to Brooklyn and Jennifer went back to her old school.

An advertising man who was friends with her father suggested to her parents that she could work as a child model . Shortly thereafter, she joined the modeling agency Ford Models . She gained her first professional experience at the age of ten with some pictures in fashion magazines and then appearances in commercials . In an interview with The Guardian newspaper , she stated that after being a child model for a while, she had no ambitions to become an actress.

Early career

Connelly had her first film appearance in 1984 in the film Once Upon a Time in America . Italian director Sergio Leone gave her the role of young aspiring ballet dancer and actress Deborah Gelly because she mimicked the ballet moves for the role during audition. She described the film as "an incredibly idyllic introduction to acting". While filming Once Upon a Time in America , she was featured in Stranger in Town of the British series The Incredible Stories of Roald Dahl .

Already in her second film Phenomena from 1985 she got the lead role of Jennifer Corvino, a young girl who uses her psychic abilities to try to hunt down a serial killer who killed students at the girls' boarding school "Richard Wagner". The little-noticed Ticket to Heaven (TV title Seven Minutes in Heaven ) premiered in 1985.

This was followed by Jim Henson's fantasy film Die Reise ins Labyrinth (1986), in which, as a teenager Sarah, she has to free her little brother Toby from the clutches of the goblin king Jareth (played by David Bowie ). Although the film was unsuccessful at the box office, it got a huge following. In December of the same year she played the pop songs Monologue of Love and Message of Love in phonetic Japanese for the Japanese market. In 1988 she starred as a young ballet student in the Italian film Étoile and as a college student in Some Girls . She appeared several times on the front cover of the American teenage magazine Seventeen .

Of her early career, she said, “Before I realized it, acting became my purpose in life. It was a strange way of growing up, coupled with my personality. ”She described herself as if she felt like a“ walking doll ”through her adolescence without ever worrying about her career.

She was now graduating from high school and attending college . From 1988 to 1989 she studied English at Yale University . In 1990 she moved to Stanford University to study drama. At the suggestion of her parents, she decided to give up her studies in order to pursue her career in cinema.

In 1990 she played the blackmailed Gloria Harper in Dennis Hopper's The Hot Spot - Game With Fire , which made a lot less money than it cost. There she had her first nude scene, which she said "Nudity was tough on me and something I thought about but not in a shabby context". She was initially slated for the lead role in his romantic comedy Pretty Woman by Garry Marshall . However, he found she was too young for that and gave Julia Roberts the role. In 1991 she starred alone in the supermarket in the comedy Kevin's Cousin , which got bad reviews. That same year, Disney's science fiction adventure Rocketeer followed , in which she played the lead role of aspiring actress Jenny, who is captured by spy Neville Sinclair while her boyfriend Cliff "Rocketeer" (played by Billy Campbell ) tries to save her. The costly production eventually became a flop. In 1992, she starred opposite Jason Priestley in the Roy Orbison video clip I Drove All Night .

Following the failure of her recent films, Connelly starred in a number of smaller films including the drama Higher Learning in 1995, the thriller By My Own Rules in 1996, and the drama Far Harbor in the same year. She established herself as a serious actress in films of the late 1990s. breakthrough

Connelly continued her career successfully in the early 2000s with roles in Waking the Dead , the Hubert Selby film adaptation Requiem for a Dream , A Beautiful Mind and the bestselling film adaptation House of Sand and Fog .

Though Keith Gordon didn't initially consider her a serious actress, he cast her in his drama Waking the Dead after seeing her 1996 work in Far Harbor on her manager's recommendation . She appeared as the social activist Sarah Williams, who dies in a car with two Chilean politicians in exile in Minneapolis when the group is assassinated. Of the role, Connelly said, “Waking the Dead was the first movie I thought I could do as I liked. I really wanted to get the most out of the role and I was very committed to it. The role meant a lot to me. "

In 2000 she celebrated her breakthrough with Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream . She became interested in the script because of its portrayal of drug addiction and its impact on the lives of the main characters. In this film, she plays the young woman Marion Silver, who wants to open a fashion shop with her boyfriend Harry Goldfarb (played by Jared Leto ), but ultimately prostitutes herself to finance her drug addiction. Connelly prepared for her role by renting and living in an apartment in her house. During this time, she isolated herself socially. She painted, listened to music, designed clothes and pondered her addictions and their causes - as she believed the protagonist would do. She also spoke to addicts and attended a meeting of the Narcotics Anonymous support group with one of her friends who was part of the group.

She was invited to audition for the role of Alicia Nash in Ron Howard's 2001 A Beautiful Mind after her manager sent the film producer a clip of the then-unreleased Requiem for a Dream . Her good relationship with leading actor Russell Crowe impressed both the director and the producers. She embodies the wife of the schizophrenic math genius John Nash , whose story the film tells. At her request, she met the real Alicia Nash to learn more about her life before filming began. The film became a box-office hit, grossing $ 313 million worldwide. In 2002, Connelly received the Golden Globe , the Oscar and the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance . She said of the film " A Beautiful Mind is a film that I'm proud of and that I love very much".

In 2003, she showed an interest in director Ang Lee's philosophical perspective on the comic book adaptation of Hulk . She appeared in the role of scientist Betty Ross, who is the ex-girlfriend of nuclear physicist Bruce Banner. The film grossed nearly $ 245 million worldwide.

Connelly said she was keen to portray Kathy Nicolo from the House of Sand and Fog based on the Andre Dubus III novel of the same name after reading the script. “I liked the fact that there is no such thing as a 'good guy' or a 'bad guy'. I found it really imperative that both sides do things that are morally questionable because life is often like that. ”Connelly plays an abandoned woman who was evicted from her bungalow on the foggy Northern California Pacific coast because of a bureaucratic error , and then fights for the house against the new owner, the Iranian immigrant Massoud Amir Behrani (played by Ben Kingsley ).
