Brooklyn Heights is a neighborhood of the New York borough Brooklyn , just across the southern tip of Manhattan . It extends from Old Fulton Street by Brooklyn Bridge south to Atlantic Avenue and from the East River east to Court Street and Cadman Plaza. Neighboring neighborhoods are: Dumbo , Fulton Ferry , Downtown Brooklyn, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill. Brooklyn Heights can be easily reached from Manhattan using various subway lines.

At the nearby Cadman Plaza is the center of public life of Brooklyn with the Borough Hall , the US Courthouse, the Supreme Court of the States New York . The neighborhood played a major role in the American Revolutionary War , as it was the headquarters of General Washington during the Battle of Long Island .

Brooklyn Heights still has buildings from the 1820s. Important writers such as WH Auden , Truman Capote , Norman Mailer and Arthur Miller lived in the historic row houses . Even Bob Dylan lived for a time in a basement in the Montague Street.

The area was named New York City's first Historic District in 1965 . This prevented the construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway through the district. The expressway now runs on two levels just below the famous waterfront. The district is now considered super-gentrified .
