In 1814, the Fulton Ferry Company , founded by Fulton, began its work here and revolutionized ferry operations between the two cities of Brooklyn and New York, which were still independent at the time. For the first time there was now a ferry service on the East River that was operated by a steamship. A ferry connection had existed here since 1642, which was served by rowing boats or small sailing boats, depending on the tide and wind conditions. The pier in Brooklyn was called Fulton Slip , the ferry connection was also known as the Old Ferry or Brookland Ferry until it was taken over by the Fulton Ferry Company from 1795 . This ferry connection was an important trade route for the Long Island farmers . These were able to bring their agricultural products and livestock into the city of New York via this route. In 1869, when construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge, approximately 50 million passengers a year use the ferries across the East River.

The designer of the Brooklyn Bridge John August Roebling had an accident while surveying a bridge pier in Fulton Ferry, as a result of which he died a little later. With the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, the ferry service ceased.

Tourist importance

River Cafe, Fulton Ferry

NY Waterway and New York Water Taxi still offer the opportunity to travel from Manhattan to Fulton Slip by ship. On the pier is the famous River Cafe and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory , which is housed in the former fire brigade boat house built in 1926. There are also some bronze plaques on the pier, commemorating the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776 and the embarkation of the American Army under George Washington from Fulton Ferry on August 29, 1776.

Part of the neighborhood was declared the Fulton Ferry Historic District in 1974 . This comprises 15 buildings that were built between 1830 and 1895, partly as a commercial and partly as a residential building. The historic part of the district is in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, on the East River at the point where the settlement of Brooklyn, then Breukelen, began. The newly created Brooklyn Bridge Park is located on the former waterfront, near the pier .
