Kevin's Cousin Alone in the Supermarket (Original Title: Career Opportunities ) is a 1991 American comedy directed by Bryan Gordon and produced by John Hughes .
action
In the small town where he lives with his family, 21-year-old Jim Dodge is notorious for being a weirdo and lazy. In daydreams he imagines that he is admired and sought after because of his professional success and his good looks. In reality, he is known for never keeping his laborer jobs long. He was fired several times by the local petrol station owner and recently he lost his job at the city animal shelter. Nobody in town takes him really seriously. The only exception are the underage boys from the neighborhood, to whom he shows his fantasies. He is a special agent at the FBI who is investigating the Mafia, known for inventing an artificial cow heart when he was 15 years old and is now a major shareholder with stakes in the animal health care sector. He also claims that he has business contact with the Vice President of Bulgaria and that he has good contact with the Princess of Austria . The children are excited about Jim Dodge and his alleged career. His family sees it differently. His father in particular wants his son to make something of himself and gives him the choice of either taking a job as a night shift cleaner at the local Target supermarket or going to St. Louis to work as a gardener for his uncle . That's why Jim takes the job at the supermarket.
On his first night shift he is locked in the shop alone, so Jim has to stay there until the shop opens at 7 a.m. the next morning. After a brief, chaotic cleaning operation, he takes a break. He helps himself in the confectionery department, watches TV and tests a wide variety of goods. As he races through the corridors in shorts and a bridal veil on roller skates, he suddenly discovers Josie. Josie, a daughter from a wealthy family, is currently rebelling against her father and, after running away from her father, let herself be locked up in the wholesale market. The police are already looking for her. Triggered by Josie's remark that Jim hurts - whether he is not the city liar - they complain to each other in conversations about the burden of their lives and discover their kinship and mutual affection. Jim has been raving about Josie since early school days and Josie envies Jim his freedom. Josie, who has $ 52,000 in her purse, suggests they both get out of town together the next morning. Together they wait until dawn and enjoy the opportunities the store offers them together.
But all of this comes to an abrupt end when they unexpectedly get in the way of two wanted robbers who want to rob the market. Jim tries to overwhelm the robbers with his fairy tales, which doesn't really work. Josie tries with her charms and manages to get hold of the criminals' pickup truck with which she leaves the supermarket. Jim took advantage of the confusion and got a shotgun from the supervisor's office. With this he overpowers the robbers. In the meantime it has gotten light and Josie is waiting for Jim at the exit of the supermarket. When Officer Don, who has been looking feverishly for Josie all night, carefully searches the supermarket, he finds the two criminals chained in deck chairs.
Meanwhile, Jim and Josie drive a limousine through the village and get off in Jim's residential area. Jim's children from the neighborhood are watching and are impressed. As discussed, the two of them leave the city and finally enjoy the Californian sun at a swimming pool . Jim, looking at the well-known Hollywood lettering , dreams with open eyes of a new lettering: "Jimwood".
