Alexander Proyas (born September 23, 1963 in Egypt ) is an Australian director of music videos , commercials and feature films .

Life

Alex Proyas was born in Egypt in 1963 to a Greek family. At the age of three the family moved to Sydney , Australia . He started making short films as a child. He received his education at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). After short films, commercials and music videos for artists such as Sting , Crowded House and INXS , he made his first longer feature film Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds , an end-of-time film in 1989 . In 1994 he finally made his first film for a Hollywood studio: The Crow . During the shooting, the main actor Brandon Lee was fatally injured by a faulty pistol and had to be computerized into his outstanding scenes to complete the production. The Crow - The Crow was a huge hit with both critics and the box office; however, his director took a long break after filming.

In 1998 he returned to the big screen with Dark City , a film with a similar theme to Matrix . Backdrops from Proya's work in Matrix were also used, but this was clearly based on Dark City . He achieved another great financial success with the film I, Robot , based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Asimov , starring Will Smith . This grossed a total of $ 347 million at the box office.

His fantasy film Gods of Egypt premiered on February 24, 2016.
