The Abbotts - When hatred kills love (Original title: Inventing the Abbotts ) is an American drama from 1997 . Directed by Pat O'Connor and written by Ken Hixon .

action

The action begins in the small town of Haley, Illinois in 1957 . The brothers Doug and Jacey Holt, who come from a working-class family, meet the beautiful Abbott sisters, who grew up in a wealthy family. Jacey begins a relationship with Eleanor Abbott. He is driven less by honest feelings than by revenge: He believes that Lloyd Abbott, Eleanor's father, cheated on his family after the accidental death of his father, John Charles Holt. Abbott is said to have robbed the Holts of a patent with which he brought his company out of a depression after the war and thus became rich.

Meanwhile, the youngest Abbott, Pamela, falls in love with the shy Doug. Since he secretly loves Eleanor, but can not have her and emulates his brother Jacey, he tries to take advantage of Pam's feelings. When she turns him away, he initially loses interest. When Jacey and Eleanor are caught together by their father, Eleanor is sent away from Haley. Shortly thereafter, Jacey tries to conquer her married sister Alice. But after Lloyd also found out about this love affair, Alice drops Jacey. He then leaves the city to continue studying at the university in Philadelphia . Meanwhile, Doug falls in love with Pamela, but the hostility between the two families caused by Jacey's behavior strains the young relationship, whereupon the two split up.

In 1960 Doug also studies in Philadelphia, where he unexpectedly meets Pamela again. But then he learns that Jacey was able to get Pamela over in the meantime. Then the brothers finally fall out. Doug doesn't blame Pamela, knowing Jacey was just using her, but she disappeared before he can talk to her about it.

The Holt brothers later return to Haley after their mother dies and make up. Doug discovers a letter in the house proving that his father sold the patent to Lloyd Abbott himself and that Abbott did not, as suspected, steal from him. After Doug learns personally from Lloyd where he can find Pamela, he seeks her out and confesses his love to her.

Doug's voice off tells that they got married a year later and had two daughters.
