Untermarchtal Castle

Johann Ulrich Späth (also: Speth) von Zwiefalten built a castle in Untermarchtal from 1573 to 1576 . In 1853 the widow, baroness von Späth, born Princess von Oettingen Wallerstein, sold the estate to the Protestant pastor Schuster von Rottenacker. Merchant Franz Joseph Linder from Rottweil then acquired the former castle in 1886 and donated it to the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, of which Sister Margarita Linder was his daughter, Superior General at the time.

On September 16, 1891, the parent company moved from Schwäbisch Gmünd to Untermarchtal. At the end of the 19th century, the former Untermarchtal Castle became the motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent von Paul in Untermarchtal .

The construction activities of the congregation during the tenure of Superior General Sister Margarita Linder (1893–1918) and her successors transformed the historical palace complex and a monastery complex developed. The most recent church building is the St. Vinzenz Church, built in 1972 based on a design by the Swiss Hermann Baur.

St. Agnes Castle, in which the house chapel is located, serves for silence and prayer. The Motherhouse Convention meets there every day for prayer.

In 1946, shortly after the Second World War, the monastery, which was then called the Guter Hirte Monastery , was used by the French occupying forces to accommodate "Berlin children" who were supposed to recover from the hardships of the war and post-war years.

In 1972 the Vinzenzkirche, built according to designs by the Basel architect Hermann Baur and contemporaries of Le Corbusier , was consecrated. It bears a certain resemblance to the famous Notre-Dame-du-Haut church in Ronchamp. The Albiez organ with over 3,000 pipes was inaugurated in 1975.

The castle is the oldest building in the motherhouse complex and has a stately staircase with carved baluster railings and a high-quality stucco ceiling on the second floor, both from the early 18th century. From the 19th century, painted canvas wallpapers with views of the princely Wallerstein castles were preserved. In the house chapel there are early Gothic sculptures and high baroque choir stalls from Rottenmünster.
