history

Former mother house in Bocksgasse, Schwäbisch Gmünd

In 1848 the Board of Trustees of the Gmünder Hospital decided to bring sisters from the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent von Paul to Schwäbisch Gmünd to care for the poor, the sick and orphans . In 1852 the first sisters were able to start work in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1855 the diocesan bishop reported in a pastoral letter about the new cooperative in Schwäbisch Gmünd and presented the plan to acquire a parent company and connected it with an appeal for donations. After the Strasbourg management wanted to withdraw the sisters in 1858, the motherhouse in Bocksgasse was acquired and the congregation in Schwäbisch Gmünd was established . The Gmünder Congregation grew rapidly, which is why it moved to Untermarchtal on September 16, 1891 due to lack of space and financial resources . There, the motherhouse complex of the Untermarchtal Monastery developed around the historic Untermarchtal Castle . Nonetheless, Schwäbisch Gmünd remained a focus of work for the congregation.

In 1972 the St. Vinzenz Church, built according to a design by the Swiss Hermann Baur, was consecrated. It bears a certain resemblance to the famous Notre-Dame-du-Haut church in Ronchamp.
