from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Urban (* 1948 in Stetten ) is a German professor , deacons and diocesan conservator in retirement .

Life and activity

After graduating from high school, which he passed at the state high school in Sigmaringen , Urban studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Tübingen .

Wolfgang Urban was from 1976 to 1986 employees of the German Research Foundation funded Collaborative Research Center 8 "Late Middle Ages and Reformation" involved in the critical edition of at the University of Paris incurred Sentences commentary of Nominalists and Augustinians Gregory of Rimini . He arranged for the critical edition of works by the Erfurt Augustinian hermit Johannes von Paltz , including his early New High German main work “Die Himmlische Fundgrube” (first published in 1490), including Middle Low German versions of the text and detailed introduction to the history of its origins and traditions, as well as three Latin sermons by this older friar of Martin Luther . In the review of Adolar Zumkeller's main work on the theology of the Erfurt Augustinian hermits, he was able to demonstrate that Gregory of Rimini had a strong influence on the Erfurt Augustinian theologians through the literal adoption of entire text passages in the doctrine of grace .

For the “ Historical Dictionary of Philosophy ” he wrote the articles “ Quality II. (Middle Ages)” and “ Quantity II. (Middle Ages)”. The article on the category of being, quantity, has no preceding example in terms of content and scope.

While researching manuscripts from the library of the former Benedictine Abbey of Wiblingen in the library of the Wilhelmsstift Tübingen, he identified one of Albert von Sachsen (born 1316 in Rickmersdorf as Albrecht Rike; died 1390 in Halberstadt) as Albrecht III. Bishop von Halberstadt, wrote a commentary on the cosmological writings ( De coelo et mundo ) of Aristotle, a copy of the Compendium theologiae veritatis by Hugo Ripelin of Strasbourg, a number of works by the leading theologian Johannes Gerson in the first third of the 15th century and the Latin works Text Liber vitae (Book of Life), in which a version of the Latin model postulated by the Germanist Wolfgang Stammler for the Book of Life , previously known only in early New High German tradition , may be hidden.

In a richly illuminated manuscript of the “Heavenly Treasure Trove” of Johannes von Paltz in Ripuarian (Cologne) dialect, which was created in Cologne in 1508 in 1508 and shows multiple Cologne coats of arms in the illuminations , he identified the 21 full-page miniatures as creations of the Master of the Bartholomew Altar .

He is the discoverer of the positions of the Tübingen late scholastic Konrad Summenhart (around 1458–1502), which are important for the history of the natural sciences, and his reflections on the possibility of the existence of a vacuum and that of 1501 from, which contradict Aristotelian natural philosophy and its principle of the " horror vacui " he thought of the possibility of a multitude of worlds . He worked on the master of Messkirch and the master of the Darmstadt Passion .

The most comprehensive representation of the iconography of Martin von Tours to date in works of art from the 6th to the 20th century comes from Wolfgang Urban . His iconographic studies include a. "Theological aesthetics and meaning of images in the frescoes by Andreas Meinrad von Au in Wald [Hohenzollern] and in Sigmaringen", "The sermon of images as a cultural asset " (here together with works from the Middle Ages on the Herrenberg Altar by Jerg Ratgeb and the one in the State Gallery The sculpture crucifixion [1962/1963] by Joseph Beuys kept in Stuttgart and on the Stuppach Madonna by Matthias Grünewald. His essay on the Baindter Plague Cross and the Stuppach Madonna by Matthias Grünewald deals with the theological and piety-historical backgrounds of Crucifixus dolorosus .

In conjunction with Heinz Georg Tiefenbacher and Egon Reiner, he provided the documentation "Create Space for God", which was accompanied by interpretation and describes church building and ecclesiastical art in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart from 1971 to 1991, as well as with Paul Kopf "Time - Spaces" the special documentation of church construction in the Catholic Dean's Office in Ludwigsburg from 1945–1990.

Activity as diocesan curator and museum director

Since 1991 he has been diocesan curator of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart , since 1993 he has been curator of the Diocesan Museum of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart in Rottenburg am Neckar . As director of the Diocesan Museum from 1992 to 1996, he carried out the re-presentation of the holdings of the diocesan collection for the refurbishment of the museum in the former Carmelite monastery church in Rottenburg . Under his leadership, the art collection of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese was expanded to include more than 500 objects of painting, sculpture and popular piety , including those by Jörg Zürn (a member of the Zürn family of sculptors ), Christoph Daniel Schenck , Johann Zick and Johann Michael Fischer , Joseph Wannenmacher . An additional qualitative increase experienced the field of sculptures of the late Gothic period by winning the Roland Collection Swiss, including a Madonna of Strasbourg Frari Master of 1478, a man of sorrows of Michel Erhart , works by Hans Thoman, and the master of the altar of Mauer bei Melk .

He expanded the stock of the diocesan art collection to include the previously neglected 20th century through the acquisition of paintings and graphics by Wilhelm Geyer , Otto Dix , HAP Grieshaber , Otto Herbert Hajek, Andy Warhol , Roland Peter Litzenburger , Klaus Herzer, Volker Stelzmann , David Bennett , Roland Schauls , Tobias Kammerer . He dedicated numerous exhibitions with accompanying catalogs to art and contemporary artists: Andreas Grunert, Dieter Groß, Otto Herbert Hajek , Jacques Gassmann , Klaus Herzer, Günther Uecker , Hanspeter Münch , Martin Schmid (* 1927, painter, son of Carlo Schmid ), Klaus Gaida, David Bennett, Zbigniew Sałaj, Hermann Weber . He retired on April 1, 2013. The author of numerous publications on church, cultural and art history is also a lecturer at the seminar for modern history at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen. On April 26, 2016, Wolfgang Urban was honored with the title of Professor from the State of Baden-Württemberg by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann .
