After studying at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (1974–1982) and a time as a lecturer at the Free Art School in Stuttgart, he worked as a freelance artist. In 1998 he was awarded the Pierre Werner Prize by the "Cercle artistique de Luxembourg".

A painting of over 100 m² with paraphrased portraits from the Uffizi has been hanging permanently in the entrance hall of the National Museum of History and Art (Musée national d'histoire et d'art (MNHA)) in Luxembourg's old town since February 2020. Between 1995 and 1998, Schauls created the overall painting consisting of a total of 504 historical painter self-portraits. The motifs were selected from the inventory of the self-portrait collection at the Uffizi in Florence and show Albrecht Dürer , Rembrandt van Rijn , Peter Paul Rubens , Velazquez and Delacroix , among others . A private society, the "Portrait Society", deals with the rediscovery of the artistic legacy of the artists portrayed.
