geography

Pangody

The settlement is located in the tundra landscape of the West Siberian lowlands north of the Arctic Circle , just under 300 kilometers as the crow flies east of the district administrative center Salekhard . It extends on the left bank of the Right Chetta (Prawaja Chetta), a right tributary of the Nadym , two kilometers above the confluence of the Pangody stream.

The place belongs to the Nadymski Rajons , whose administrative center Nadym is about 100 kilometers to the southwest.

history

Pangody was created in 1971 in connection with the discovery and beginning of the exploitation of the first natural gas reservoir in the Medvezhye region and the construction of natural gas pipelines . It was named after the nearby brook, the name of which stands for foot of the hill in Nenzische .

In 1979 urban-type settlement status was given.

Economy and Infrastructure

Local economic sectors are natural gas production as well as maintenance and operation of the pipelines passing by.

Pangody is located at 187 km (from Korottschajewo) of the railway line Korottschajewo - Novy Urengoy - Stary Nadym (district of Nadym on the opposite, right bank of the Nadym river). This represents a section of the Arctic Circle Railway that was initially completed for freight traffic between the 1970s and 1980s , the construction of which was canceled after Stalin's death in 1953. The line is operated today by the Yamal Railways ( Ямальские железные дороги / Jamalskije schelesnyje dorogi), a joint venture between Russian Railways and Gazprom . From the direction of Novy Urengoy there is also passenger traffic, further towards Nadym only goods traffic.

The Novy Urengoy – Nadym road, which is only passable during the frosty season, also runs through Pangody, but its fortification (asphalting) to the west has not yet been completed. In the immediate vicinity, the settlement has an airport for local connections.
