Urengoy ( Russian Уренго́й ) is an urban-type settlement in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 10,066 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It should not be confused with the city of Novy Urengoy, 80 kilometers to the west .

geography

Urengoy is located in the West Siberian lowlands , about 530 kilometers east (as the crow flies) of the district capital Salekhard . The city is located on the right (eastern) bank of the Pur River .

Urengoy belongs to the Purowski Rajon , whose administrative center Tarko-Sale is about 120 kilometers south, near the origin of the Pur from its source rivers Pjakupur and Aiwassedapur .

history

At the end of the 1940s, it was planned to cross the Pur by the Arctic Railway from Salekhard to Igarka in the area of today's Urengoy settlement . After the construction was stopped after Stalin's death, the place was abandoned until the development of the oil and natural gas reserves of Western Siberia began in the 1960s . 1966 is considered the year the town was founded.

Discovered in a row huge gas field was named after the settlement gas field Urengoy . Soon a new settlement was built further west, closer to the gas production sites, Novy Urengoy ("New Urengoy"), which soon overtook the old settlement in terms of importance and population and now has over 100,000 residents. But Urengoy also received urban-type settlement status in 1979 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The main branch of the economy is oil and gas exploration: numerous geological and geophysical companies are located in Urengoy.

About ten kilometers southwest of the city is the Korottschajewo settlement , where the railway line from Stary Nadym or Jamburg (via Novy Urengoy) in the direction of Tyumen (via Surgut ) bends south (and thus leaves the course of the Arctic Railway). This south-facing section of the route was still regularly put into operation by the Soviet State Railways in 1990 , is now operated by the Russian State Railways (RŽD) and also connects the region to the rail network of the European part of Russia. The line leading from Korottschajewo via Novy Urengoy to the west, which follows the route of the Arctic Circle Railway, which was partially completed in the 1950s, was put into operation as an industrial line as early as the 1970s and is now operated by the Yamal Railway Company , a joint venture of autonomous circle RŽD branch Sverdlovsk Railway and Sewtjumentransput .

Urengoy has so far only been connected to Korottschajewo and the road network on the left bank of the Pur via pontoon bridges or an ice road in winter. At the settlement there is a small river port on the Pur.
