Jamburg ( Ямбург ) is a settlement in Nadym Raion of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with almost 100 permanent residents (2017).

geography

Jamburg is located on the Tas peninsula in the north of the West Siberian lowland , on the eastern bank of the Obbusen near the confluence of the Nyudja-Mongotajopoko river ( Нюдя-Монготаёпоко ).

In addition to the permanent residents, up to 14,000 natural gas workers are temporarily employed in Jamburg and the surrounding area.

Jamburg is connected to Novy Urengoy by road and rail . The latter is operated by the Yamal Railways ( Ямальские железные дороги / Jamalskije schelesnyje dorogi), a joint venture between the Russian Railways and Gazprom , with goods and passenger transport (one pair of trains per day, travel time about eight hours). The place has an airport. A special permit is required to enter Jamburg .

history

The Jamburg settlement was built in 1982 when the huge Jamburger natural gas field began to be developed .

economy

Jamburg is shaped by the natural gas industry. The gas field, which has been exploited since 1986, belongs to the Gazprom Group, whose subsidiaries Jamburggasdobytscha (exploration and production) and Tjumentransneft (transport) operate here.
