The Obbusen ( Russian Обская губа, Obskaja guba ) is the estuary of the Ob in northern Siberia ( Russia , Asia ).

It is located northeast of the northern end of the Ural Mountains , north of the West Siberian Lowlands , east of the Yamal and west of the Gydan Peninsula .

The 750 km long and 30 to 70 km wide Obbusen begins directly at the Arctic Circle and, as an estuary, is already a bay of the Kara Sea , which in turn is part of the Arctic Ocean . The Pur and the Tas , which flow through the Tasbusen, also flow into this body of water .

In the geological sense, the obbus is that section of the river bed which was inundated by the sea during the global rise in sea level in the Holocene , eroding the low peat banks and widening the sea bosom. Despite the flooding, it retained a typical river regime for most of its length. Driven by the water masses of the Ob, it has a strong current flowing northwards. The speeds of this current reach 0.3 to 0.4 m / s in the southern and central part. Because of this, the Obbusen is often considered the last section of the river and its length is added accordingly to the total length. According to this calculation, Irtysh and Ob together reach 6160 km of flowing distance .

The flat undulating landscape surrounding the Obbusen was leveled by ice age glaciers; it is dominated by the tundra . The only larger town is Nowy Port , which is right on the Obbusen.
