history

Tarko Sale is one of the oldest places in the region. The name of the place, founded in 1932, was derived from the Nenets talka salja , which means settlement on a headland (between two rivers) .

In connection with the beginning of the development of the region's oil and natural gas reserves in the 1970s, the settlement grew rapidly and received urban-type settlement status in 1976 . On March 23, 2004 the city charter was awarded.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city's main industry is natural gas extraction and processing. This is where the second largest RTS -listed natural gas producer in Russia, Novatek, is based after Gazprom .

About ten kilometers west of the city is its Purovsk train station on the Tyumen - Surgut - Nowy Urengoy railway line, which opened on this section in 1985 . The city has so far only been connected to the railway station and the Surgut – Novy Urengoy road, which also runs on the far left bank of the Pjakupur, via a pontoon bridge or, in winter, an ice road.

Tarko-Sale has a small river port on Pjakupur and an airport ( ICAO code USDS ).
