Charp ( Nenets and Russian Харп ) is an urban-type settlement in the autonomous district of Yamal-Nenets ( Russia ) with 6413 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Charp

The settlement is located on the eastern edge of the Polar Urals north of the Arctic Circle , almost 50 km as the crow flies northwest of the republic capital Salekhard and 30 km northwest of the city of Labytnangi . It is located on the left bank of the left Ob tributary Sob opposite the confluence of the Jenga-Ju tributary.

Charp belongs to the Priuralski Rajon and is about 100 km from its administrative center Aksarka in a west-northwest direction.

history

The place was created in the early 1960s on the western part of the Arctic Circle Railway from Tschum south of Vorkuta across the Urals to Labytnangi am Ob, which went into regular operation in 1955 , in connection with the economic development. At first he wore the Russian name Severnoye Sijanije ( ' aurora ') , later the Nenets match is Charp official. Urban-type settlement status was granted in the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

The stock corporation Kongor-Chrom mines a chromite deposit near Charp. In the settlement there is a cement factory of Jamalneftegas-schelesobeton , the priority of Gazprom exploited gas fields on the Yamal Peninsula supplies, as well as a gas-powered thermal power plant with a capacity of 10 megawatts for the local supply.

Charp is located on the Arctic Circle Railway ( Charp - Severoje Sijanije station , route km 153 from Tschum). There is a road connection to Labytnangi am Ob.

The place is also known for the prison camps located there, including one of five in Russia for offenders sentenced to life imprisonment. The serial killer Alexander Pitchushkin is one of the inmates there. In another camp, the entrepreneur Platon Lebedev , former vice-chairman of the Yukos oil company , served part of his prison sentence from 2005.
