history

The place was founded in 1595 as a Cossack fortress and was called Obdorsk (Обдорск) until 1933 , which means something like "place on the Ob" in the Komi language . By the end of the 18th century the fortress lost its strategic importance, instead winter fairs were held every year in Obdorsk. In addition, the settlement was sometimes used as a place of exile .

1933 was Obdorsk that three years before the main town of the national circuit of the Yamal Nenets was his Nenets name Salekhard means of literally 'settlement at the Cape. " In 1938 Salekhard was officially recognized as a city. At the end of the 1940s, Stalin's instructions began with the construction of a new port in Nowy Port , around 270 km northeast of Salekhard, and with the expansion of the Arctic Circle Railway from Salekhard to Igarka on the Yenisei . After Stalin's death, however, the project was forgotten and Salekhard lost its importance. To this day it is not connected to the more western Vorkuta by the Arctic Railway, as there is no bridge over the Ob to Labytnangi.

economy

The industry is rather weakly represented in Salekhard with some food operations (including fish processing). A larger part of the city's economic infrastructure is made up of raw materials and service companies, including the natural gas company Novatek , which is headquartered here, as well as departments of the major companies Uralsvyazinform , Gazprom and Lukoil . The city is the seat of the major Russian airline Yamal Airlines .

Transportation

Salekhard can be reached by ferry in summer and by ice road from Labytnangi in winter, where the completed western section of the Arctic Circle Railway ends. Preparations are being made for the construction of the planned Ob Bridge (combined for rail and car traffic) to Labytnang as part of the continuous commissioning of the Arctic Circle Railway between Obskaja and Nadym .

The city has a river port with connections to Khanty-Mansiysk and Omsk and an airport with the IATA code SLY. A trunk road to Nadym is under construction.
