Arnold Nesselrath (* 1952 in Aachen ) is a German art historian .

Nesselrath studied art history, archeology and classical philology at the University of Mainz , the Courtauld Institute of the University of London and the University of Bonn . In Bonn he received his doctorate with a thesis on the Fossombron sketchbook. Since 1981 he has headed the project of the Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance , first at the Warburg Institute , then at the Bibliotheca Hertziana , and finally in 1995 the project was transferred to the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1982 he started working with the Vatican Museums . In 1995 he was appointed director of the Byzantine, Medieval and Modern Art Department. Since 1996 he has also been a professor for Medieval and Modern Art History with a focus on the afterlife of antiquity at the Humboldt University in Berlin.
