The Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Krakow (also: Society of Friends of Fine Arts ; Polish: Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie , TPSP for short ) is a Krakow organization of artists and art lovers, which was founded in 1854 as the first organization of its kind in Polish Ground was established.

history

On the initiative of the property owner Mikołaj Walery Wielogłowski, the founding act of the company took place on January 21, 1854 in the premises of the Technical School at ul. Gołębia 22 . The statute had previously been approved by the competent authorities in Vienna . Władysław Sanguszko was appointed as president, Henryk Wodzicki as his deputy and Walery Wielogłowski as general secretary / managing director (Polish: secretary ). The organization and the tasks of the TPSP were based on the model of foreign art development associations - in addition to an annual general meeting at which the basic principles were determined, the board of directors and the managing director managed day-to-day business. The goals of the society were to promote the general public's interest in art, such as supporting artists through material donations, exhibitions or arranging contacts abroad.

As part of the exhibition activities of the TPSP, debut exhibitions were held by such important artists as Jan Matejko , Julian Fałat , Włodzimierz Tetmajer , Stanisław Wyspiański , Józef Mehoffer , Jacek Malczewski and Olga Boznańska . In the last quarter of the 19th century, the activities of the TSPS promoted Kraków's artistic life considerably. In cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts Krakow , grants and prizes were awarded to their graduates. In 1894, a fund was set up through which artists in need received cheap loans. The fund was financed through a 5% mark-up on exhibition sales. Monument conservation measures were also supported. In 1864, for example, 100 gold guilders were made available for the restoration of the Krakow altar by Veit Stoss . The TPSP also participated in exhibitions abroad, such as in Vienna (1872/1873) and in Berlin (1891).

In the 20th century, society increasingly took conservative views, modern art forms were not accepted. The formists and colorists in particular criticized the TPSP's exhibition and funding policy.

The society was a role model and sometimes a supporter of the establishment of similar organizations in Poznan ( Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych w Poznaniu ), Lviv or the Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych (Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts) in Warsaw, founded in 1860 .

In the course of its existence the society had different seats. Amongst others, she held offices and, in some cases, exhibition spaces in the Larisch Palace, the Bishop's Palace and the Cloth Hall . Since 1901 it has had its own building, called the “Art Palace”, at Plac Szczepańskim 4 . After the Second World War , an object in the Nowa Huta district ( Aleja Róż ) and the Matejkos country house were added. In the 1980s, the TPSP received a villa in the Wola Justowska district from Estreicher's legacy.

membership

The members of the company purchased shares that allowed them to participate in an annual lottery. Artists donated works for this lottery, and graphics were also issued for important works of art. Often such valuable works of art, such as B. Jan Matejko's painting “Stańczyk”, raffled.

The Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the TPSP included Marceli Czartoryski, Marian Dąbrowski, Tadeusz Dobrowolski, Karol Estreicher, Julian Fałat, Władysław Jarocki , Marceli Jawornicki, Alfons Karpiński , Feliks Kopera, Wojciech Kossakys, Henry Hierkadzyakski , Władysławzander Racackiński , Władysław Rodzyakowski, Wojciech Kossakławski , Władyzanderzander Racackiński Sanguszko, Piotr Stachiewicz , Stanisław Tomkowicz, Ignacy Trybowski, Franciszek Walter, Wojciech Weiss , Zbigniew Witek and Henryk Wodzicki.
