Olga Boznańska , even Olga of Boznańska (* 15. April 1865 in Krakow ; † 26. October 1940 in Paris ) was a Polish painter of the Post-Impressionism and representative of the cultural flow Young Poland .

life and work

Olga Helena Karolina Boznańska was born as the daughter of the Polish railway engineer Adam Nowina Boznański († 1906) and the French Eugénie Mondan († 1892) in Krakow , then Austria . Together with her sister Izabela (* 1868, † 1934) she received her first drawing lessons from her mother. In 1878 she was in Paris with her parents and sister and attended the world exhibition there . From 1883 to 1886, Olga studied with Józef Siedlecki and Kazimierz Pochwalski and attended advanced courses for women in the Technical-Industrial Museum in Cracow founded by Adrian Baraniecki by Hipolit Lipiński and Antoni Piotrowski among others.

In Munich she studied from 1886 to 1888 at Carl Kricheldorf's school and in 1888 shared a studio with Hedwig Weiss . She then studied with Wilhelm Dürr , but only until 1889, because he then became too ill. She was often to be found in the Alte Pinakothek because she copied old masters there in order to continue her education in this way. Also in 1889 she moved into her own studio.

Her third teacher was Paul Nauen , with whom a friendship developed. In 1893 she portrayed him in her studio and in the same year he portrayed her. In 1894 Olga Boznańska received the small gold (silver) state medal for the portrait of Paul Nauen at the International Art Exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Vienna . When the Bayerischer Kurier reported on the exhibition and criticized Paul Nauen, not the picture, and described him as a cripple of civilization , Nauen sued the editor in charge and won the process. Both paintings are now part of the collection of the National Museum in Krakow .

In addition to the German artists, Olga Boznańska's circle of artists also included Polish artists who were working in Munich at the time, such as Waclaw Szymanowski, Józef Brandt and Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski , who were also her mentors . In 1895 she took over the management of Theodor Hummel's painting school in Munich. During her time in Munich she made many trips. She often traveled to Krakow. Other destinations were Berlin and Vienna , where she copied paintings by Diego Velázquez in the Kunsthistorisches Museum , which she admired. Paris was also her travel destination several times.

In 1898 she moved entirely to Paris and rented a studio at 9 rue Campagne Première in the Montparnasse district . In the same year she became a member of the Polish artists' association "Sztuka" . In 1901 she became a member of the French artists 'association Société nationale des beaux-arts , founded an artists' association with Leonia Bierkowska, of which they were both chairmen, and had a studio at 114 rue Campagne Première . Olga Boznańska also taught painting and taught at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière , the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Vitti . She was one of those women in art who started teaching at an early age.
