The artnet AG is a listed online service provider for the international art trade . The company's main offices are in Berlin and New York with branches in the People's Republic of China, Great Britain and Russia.

Business model

The business idea is to make the art market in the fields of fine arts , applied arts and design transparent by providing as comprehensive information as possible on price developments and market trends.

Services

The heart of this business model are the price databases from artnet. The artnet Price Database Fine Art and Design and Price Database Decorative Art contain around 7 million auction results from over 700 international auction houses. The Price Database Fine Art and Design contains auction results since 1985, the sales results in the Price Database Decorative Art begin with the year 2000. The price databases can be used to research market prices and long-term price developments of works of art online. Both databases are accessible via monthly subscriptions.

The second core product is the gallery network artnet Galleries, which currently includes around 2000 international galleries with their artists and works. The galleries and the artists pay a monthly fee for their presence.

These services are supplemented by the online auction platform artnet Auctions, on which visual arts and design can be auctioned and offered for sale: The offers are only presented for a few days.

history

1989-1995

The company was founded in 1989. The first product was a digitally illustrated database containing auction prices for works of art. This gave collectors and dealers a quick overview of price developments on the art market. Data and images could be called up by modem using proprietary software. In 1995 the former art dealer Hans Neuendorf , one of the co-founders of artnet, was appointed CEO.

From 1996

In 1996 the price database was transferred to the Internet and could now be used regardless of the platform. Since then, the data can be searched online on the artnet website. artnet Galleries, artnet Magazine and other information services expanded the website into an online platform for collectors, dealers and other players in the art market.

The artnet Worldwide Corp. merged in 1998 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of artnet.com AG, which was established in Germany in 1998. In 1999 the company was first listed on the Neuer Markt of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange .

In 2000, artnet attempted to offer online art auctions as an additional service. However, the concept could not establish itself on the market at this time.

In 2002 the company changed its name to artnet AG. On October 4, 2002, artnet AG left the Neuer Markt and was initially listed on the regulated market of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Since February 1, 2007, the company has been listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

In February 2008, the online auctions started again, which were able to establish themselves through lower transaction costs and faster processing than with conventional auction houses and which have grown rapidly in size and turnover.

Since March 2009 the Price Database Fine Art and Design has been supplemented by the Price Database Decorative Art, which contains sales results for antiques such as furniture, silverware, carpets and clocks since 2000.

Jacob Pabst, son of Hans Neuendorf, has been the new CEO since July 1st, 2012. The chairman of the supervisory board has been Hans Neuendorf since 2013. His deputy is the Berlin lawyer Pascal Decker .

Cooperations

In autumn 2004, artnet entered into a cooperation with the international auction house Sotheby’s .

In the summer of 2007 the collaboration with Art Basel / Art Basel Miami Beach began . Part of this cooperation is a virtual extension of this art fair, which means that exhibited works can be accessed on the company's website after the end of the fair.

In October 2008, artnet entered into a cooperation with the Federal Association of German Galleries and Editions ( BVDG ).

There are other collaborations with art fairs (for example ARCO  Madrid , Art Cologne , Art Élysées and Design Élysées ), with the trade journal EIKON and The Art Newspaper as well as with the Museum Kunstpalast .
