The magazine Eikon (spelling: EIKON ) is an Austrian specialist magazine for photography and media art .

Subject

The magazine, which has been published four times a year since December 1991, is published by the Austrian Institute for Photography and Media Art (ÖIP), whose headquarters are in the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna . Founding publisher is Carl Aigner , current editor-in-chief is Nela Eggenberger. She mainly deals with photography and media art. The periodical reports mainly on current art events in this area as well as on intermedia references. Here it wants to build a bridge between photographic art and new media as well as the visual arts. All of these art forms stand side by side on an equal footing.

EIKON has been published in two languages ​​(English and German) since 2004. The magazine is divided into two thematic areas.

Artist Pages

The first part, the “Artist Pages”, includes descriptive as well as art theoretical contributions. An important concern is the presentation of young artists from the fields of photography, media art and other interdisciplinary art forms. The focus is on introducing Austrian artists. New developments by established artists are also discussed. Special issues appear at irregular intervals on various aspects and programs.

Student Pages

The second part of the magazine deals with current artistic and cultural-political issues. Institutions, collections, galleries and artistic groups are also presented.

More content

Book reviews, exhibition reviews, an exhibition calendar and information about scholarships, prizes and events make up additional contents of the magazine.

Varia

Library

EIKON has a publicly accessible library. There, visitors have the opportunity to access more than 5,000 publications from the fields of photography, fine arts, art history and technology as well as an extensive collection of regularly subscribed specialist journals.

Events

At the "EIKON PhotoTalks", which have been taking place in loose succession since 2005, people interested in art and photography have the opportunity to get to know artists at panel discussions.

Special publication on the occasion of 25 years of EIKON

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the magazine, edited by Carl Aigner and Nela Eggenberger, a cassette with five books, each on five selected artists , was published in June 2016 under the title 5 × 5 , which had been presented in the previous years of EIKON were. The five books were written by the photo critics David Bate, Linde B. Lehtonen, Steffen Siegel , Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Urs Stahel.
