Art Basel is an international art fair with events in Basel , Miami Beach and Hong Kong , operated by the MCH Group . In 2002 the fair was held for the first time outside of Europe with Art Basel in Miami Beach , and in 2013 another location in Southeast Asia was added with Art Basel in Hong Kong . Each fair consists of the participating galleries, certain exhibition areas, works of art and a parallel program, which is designed in cooperation with the local institutions of the respective city. Art Basel offers galleries a platform to show and sell their work to collectors, museum directors and curators. It attracts an international audience.

history

The idea of organizing an art fair in Basel was born in 1968. The initiative came from the gallery owners and art dealers Trudi Bruckner , Balz Hilt and Ernst Beyeler . 90 gallery owners and 30 publishers from ten countries took part in the first trade fair, which was held in Basel from June 11 to 16, 1970, and according to the company, it attracted 16,300 visitors. In 1975, five years after its founding, Art Basel reached its current size of almost 300 exhibitors. The participating galleries come from 21 countries and 37,000 visitors visit the show.

Since 1994 the major Swiss bank UBS has been Art Basel's lead partner in Basel. In 1999 the partnership was extended to the «Unlimited» sector and in 2001 to Art Basel in Miami Beach. Due to its international importance, Art Basel was referred to in 2004 by the London newspaper The Daily Telegraph as the " Olympics of the art world".

Art Basel celebrated its 40th anniversary from June 10th to 14th, 2009. In 2013 Art Basel will start its first show in Hong Kong. Half of the participating galleries come from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. The UBS is also a partner of Art Basel in Hong Kong.

In 2014 Art Basel launched the crowdfunding initiative together with Kickstarter . The aim is to create visibility for artistic projects and to generate financial support. Also in 2014, Art Basel published «Art Basel | Year 44 »- the first book to cover all three shows. In 2015, the BMW Art Journey Award was jointly founded by BMW and Art Basel to honor promising artists in the “Discoveries” sector in Hong Kong and the “Positions” sector in Miami Beach.

Art Basel and the sister fair Miami Art Basel were postponed from June to September in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but canceled on June 6 for 2020. Art Basel Hong Kong has also been canceled for 2020.

Selection process

Each Art Basel Show has its own exhibitor advisory board ("Selection Committee"), a committee made up of international gallery owners that reviews all applications and selects the participating galleries. Every year a new application process begins, in which every gallery has to participate again. The gallery owners of the Selection Committee usually hold this role for several years.

Initiatives

The Art Basel initiatives focus on the broader art world. Art Basel has four main initiatives: Art Basel Cities, BMW Art Journey, Crowdfunding and The Art Market.

  • Art Basel Cities is a project in which Art Basel and partner cities around the world create a cultural program over the course of the year. Art Basel, the city's local art actors and city officials get together and develop both a program in line with the city and long-term cultural development goals. This initiative was launched during the 2016 Hong Kong edition of Art Basel. Cities interested in working together can apply using an online questionnaire. The first twin city is Buenos Aires.
  • BMW Art Journey Award is a global initiative by Art Basel and BMW to support emerging artists worldwide. All artists exhibiting in the young «Positions» and «Discoveries» sectors of Art Basel in Miami Beach and Hong Kong can apply. Two juries, made up of internationally recognized experts, each select three artists for the shortlist of the award. They can then submit their travel suggestions to further develop their artistic ideas and their implementation.
  • The crowdfunding initiative is a partnership between Kickstarter and Art Basel. The goal is to generate visibility and support around the world for non-commercial artistic projects. The projects include artist residencies, educational programs, local exhibitions in public spaces and other innovative artistic projects. The selection is made by an independent jury consisting of three specialists from the non-commercial art world.
  • The Art Market is an annual study that analyzes the global art market. The first report appeared in 2017.
