history

In 1866, 35 artists founded the Chicago Academy of Design in one studio. The intention was to run an independent school with an attached art gallery. In 1878 the school had high debts and had to file for bankruptcy. The facility was taken over by the specially founded Chicago Academy of Fine Arts . In 1882 the name was changed to the current name Art Institute of Chicago .

The school is privately owned and has around 3000 students. The current president is the American architect and urban planner Wellington Reiter (as of 2010).
