Thomas Hart Benton (painter)
Thomas Hart Benton also Tom Benton (born April 15, 1889 in Neosho , Missouri , † January 19, 1975 in Kansas City , Missouri) was an American painter. He is considered a representative of American regionalism and muralism . His cartoon-like paintings depict everyday scenes from the Midwest , particularly rural images of pre-industrial agricultural life.
He was a teacher in New York at the Art Students League , one of his students was Jackson Pollock .
Early years
Thomas Hart Benton was born as the grandson of the former US Senator of the same name, Thomas Hart Benton . His father was also a lawyer and congressman . He spent his childhood in both Missouri and Washington, DC He rebelled against his parents' wishes to pursue a career in politics and became more interested in the arts. As a teenager , he drew cartoons for the local newspaper of Joplin (Missouri) , the Joplin American .
education
In 1907 Benton enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago , but in 1909 he moved to Paris , where he continued his education at the Académie Julian . In Paris, Benton met other North American artists such as Diego Rivera and Stanton Macdonald-Wright , a representative of synchromism . Wright's influence gave Benton's work strong synchromistic features.
Teaching
Benton taught at the Art Students League in New York. Jackson Pollock was one of his students (from 1929 to 1931).
Memberships
In 1942 Thomas Hart Benton was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1956 he was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design .
