Elizabeth Murray (artist)

Elizabeth Murray (born September 6, 1940 in Chicago , † August 12, 2007 in New York ) was an American artist .

Life

The artist was one of the first women to put together a historiographical revision of modern artistic concepts. In the course of her research, she gained new knowledge about Kasimir Malewitsch , Piet Mondrian , Paul Cézanne , Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky .

Her style combined elements of cubism and surrealism . Her puzzle style in particular was considered unique. She addressed the inner fragility of humans.

Elizabeth Murray exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA ) in New York . In 1994 she was elected a full member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design . In 1992 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1998 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1999 she was a MacArthur Fellow .

She died of lung cancer at the age of 66 .
