The Erna Graff Foundation for Animal Welfare is a non-profit foundation under civil law. It was built on February 28, 1983 by Erna Graff, the long-time president and honorary president of the animal welfare association for Berlin and the surrounding area. Today the foundation's activities are determined by the voluntary board of directors.

The purpose of the foundation is to promote animal welfare . The foundation pursues this purpose by financing selected research projects as well as through its own projects.

Focus

The two focal points of the foundation's work are:

  • The spread of the idea of animal welfare among young people through the nationwide inclusion of animal welfare in school lessons.
  • Research funding on alternative and supplementary methods to animal experiments.

At the end of the 1990s, the foundation made possible the project "Animal Welfare as a Subject in Berlin Schools". The first animal welfare textbook in Germany emerged from the experiences of these animal welfare lessons in the series “Practical Biology Lessons” by Ernst Klett Verlag .

Projects

The foundation is filing a criminal complaint against the monkey experiments at the Max Planck Institute in Tübingen .

Together with the Löwenherz Theater , the foundation has developed the play “Expedition to Next Door” for children. The play took place for the first time in winter 2013 and will be performed again in 2014 in schools in Berlin and the surrounding area.

In July 2014 the project “Erna helps helpers!” Was started. Smaller animal welfare associations are helped to fulfill their task. This can be done either through public calls, donations, legal support or professional advice.

Examples of former projects of the Foundation for Animal Welfare are the establishment of a laboratory for the development of alternative methods to animal experiments in the Academy for Animal Welfare in Neubiberg (near Munich), the establishment of the "Advisory and Training Institute for the careful handling of breeding and slaughter animals " ( bsi) in Schwarzenbek (near Hamburg) and the financial support of the interdisciplinary lecture series "Animal Rights".

Between 2001 and 2005, the foundation awarded the “Animal Welfare Promotion Prize”, endowed with DM 5,000  or EUR 2500, to students and doctoral candidates who took animal welfare into account in their scientific work.

The foundation has successfully worked to improve the conditions for animal transport.
