The Südwest Presse ( spelling SÜDWEST PRESSE ) is a German newspaper from Ulm .

The circulation sold is 254,710 copies, a decrease of 26.8 percent since 1998. With partner titles and investments , the newspaper reaches around 1.1 million readers per day and appears in more than a third of the state of Baden-Württemberg .

The company behind the Südwest Presse is Neue Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, based in Ulm, which also holds 100% of the Märkische Oderzeitung and Lausitzer Rundschau . Ebner Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (Ulm) and ZVD Mediengesellschaft mbH (Göppingen) are each 50 percent shareholders of the Neue Pressegesellschaft. Contrary to what is often claimed, the Neue Pressegesellschaft is not an investment by SWMH .

history

The Südwest Presse is the successor to the Ulmer Tagblatt founded in 1859, which was taken over by Ebner Verlag in 1877 . During the Nazi era , the newspaper was merged with the Ulmer Sturm on May 2, 1934 . After the Second World War , Kurt Fried , Johannes Weißer and Paul Thielemann received the license to publish the Schwäbische Donau-Zeitung from the American occupation authorities in 1945 .

As early as 1952, the family company J. Ebner had signed its first major contracts with the newspaper publisher. In 1955, after the death of Johann Weißer, Max and Carl Ebner entered the newspaper with 50 percent of the shares. In 1962 the daily newspaper Ulmer Nachrichten, which had also appeared since 1949, merged with the Schwäbische Donauzeitung. In 1968 the Schwäbische Donauzeitung was renamed the Südwest Presse . A cooperation began with nine local newspapers from western Württemberg ( Tübingen , Balingen , Schwenningen , Metzingen / Bad Urach , Reutlingen ) and other local newspapers whose distribution area was in East Württemberg ( including Aalen , Schwäbisch Hall , Bad Mergentheim , Crailsheim ) and in the greater area Stuttgart lay. In 1974 the Südwest Presse merged with the Neue Württembergische Zeitung Göppingen. In this context, their publisher joins Ulmer Zeitungsverlag as a company with a 50 percent stake .

Edition and technical data

The Südwest Presse and most of the affiliated newspapers appear in the “Rheinische Format” , some affiliated newspapers in the smaller “ Berliner Format ”. It is printed at seven locations.

Last year it decreased by 0.7%. It currently amounts to 254,710 copies for all editions combined (excluding Bietigheimer Zeitung and Eberbacher Zeitung ), including 51,358 copies for the actual Südwest Presse (Ulm, Neu-Ulm, Alb-Donau-Kreis). The share of subscriptions in the total circulation sold is 89.5 percent.

Newspaper association and distribution area

Altogether more than 20 newspaper titles belong to the Südwest Presse today , spread over a geographical area from Bad Mergentheim in the north to Villingen-Schwenningen in the southwest, which lies roughly crescent-shaped from the east around the Stuttgart area (with two essential exceptions: the Bietigheimer Zeitung, which is in Bietigheim-Bissingen in the Stuttgart area appears, and the Eberbacher Zeitung, which appears in Eberbach, Baden). The distribution area overlaps with those of various other daily newspapers (including the Schwäbische Zeitung, the Augsburger Allgemeine or the Stuttgarter Nachrichten-Gruppe).

As with the print edition of the newspaper, the network also works together on the Internet. The daily newspapers are combined under swp.de - a news portal with national and local reporting. There are also mobile pages from swp.de, a Facebook presence and, since September 2013, an e-newspaper from Südwest Presse and its local newspapers by subscription . At the same time, a web subscription and a payment model were introduced for the news portal swp.de and its local editions.

The Neue Pressegesellschaft publishes a number of weekly papers. Special publications with a mixture of news and advertisements are produced for them. These advertising papers under the umbrella of the Neue Pressegesellschaft are available free of charge every week for almost all households in the distribution area. They achieve a total weekly circulation of almost 2 million copies. The Ulmer Wochenblatt, founded in 1966, was awarded the 2013 prize for closeness to the citizen by the Federal Association of German Advertising Papers ( BVDA ).

particularities

Südwest Presse has invested in new printing machines in recent years. At the end of 2011, a new printing center was built in Crailsheim for around 22 million euros. New printing machines were put into operation at the Ulm and Weingarten locations, which enable a production speed of 45,000 copies per hour. Investments are also being made in the regional printing center at the Frankfurt / Oder printing site. In 2014, a Geoman newspaper press was relocated from the Ulm-Oberschwaben printing company to Frankfurt / Oder, including a comprehensive upgrade of the machines and control station technology as well as extensive overhaul and retrofit work on the printing units and folder.

The Südwest Presse has been running the “Aktion 100 000” fundraising campaign since 1971, through which social institutions and individuals in the area are supported. In 2017/2018, 1,000,000 euros were collected.

The educational project "We read" started in 2011 by Südwest Presse is an offer for secondary schools in the region. Sponsors give schools newspaper subscriptions for one year. In addition, the project team, together with the sponsors, organizes monthly events in the cultural, political and economic areas inside and outside the classroom. The project is supervised by permanent teachers.

Holdings

As a holding company, the Neue Pressegesellschaft directly and indirectly bundles numerous media companies, such as the radio stations Radio 7 , Radio Regenbogen and Berliner Rundfunk . The group is also active in the TV sector with Regio TV . In 2012, the Neue Pressegesellschaft took over all shares in the Märkische Oderzeitung , which also includes the Oranienburger Generalanzeiger and large advertising papers (Brawo, Märker, Märkischer Markt, Märkischer Sonntag). In 2018, the Neue Pressegesellschaft acquired 100 percent of the Lausitzer Rundschau through its subsidiary Märkisches Medienhaus . Since 2015, the political and economic reporting of both the Südwest Presse and the Märkische Oderzeitung has been supplied by the Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft , also a subsidiary of the Neue Pressegesellschaft. In 2018, the Schwäbische Zeitung was added. Further areas are opened up, such as the agency business (Staufen Plus, Schwäbische Messegesellschaft) or business areas in the field of logistics (Südwest-Mail, Freyplus) and travel (Hapag-Lloyd travel agency). The NPG Digital GmbH advises small and medium-sized companies in the development and implementation of digital campaigns (Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, build mobile websites). Printing takes place at seven locations in which the Neue Pressegesellschaft has at least one significant stake.

In addition, Südwest Presse develops print products in book format, for example historical illustrated books, print products with leisure tips and travel guides.
