Ebner & Spiegel GmbH is one of the largest book printing companies in Germany, based in Ulm . However, the book printing companies should not be confused with Ebner Verlag GmbH & Co KG, with which there is only a historical, but no current connection.

history

The J. Ebner'sche bookstore and printing house was established in 1817th In 1859 the Ebner publishing house founded the “Ulmer Tagblatt” (today's Südwest Presse ). A few years after the end of World War II, the company began producing inexpensive paperbacks . From 1978 the company moved to a new building in Ulm-Böfingen. In 1982 newspaper production was outsourced to today's printing house in Ulm-Oberschwaben , in the Danube Valley industrial area. The printing house was operated jointly by the Schwäbische Zeitung and the Südwest Presse. In 2001, Groupe-CPI took over J. Ebner completely from Ebner Pressegesellschaft.

The Franz Spiegel Buch GmbH was founded in 1930 by Franz Xaver mirror as a small bindery in Ulm. In 1968 the company, which had meanwhile grown considerably, moved into its own company building in Ulm-Jungingen. In 1977 Mairs Graphische Betriebe and the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group each took a 30% share in the company. In 2000, CPI acquired 40% of the shares, and in 2001 the remaining 60% from Holtzbrinck.

Ebner & Spiegel

The company was created in 2002 from the merger of the sub-companies J. Ebner Graphische Betriebe GmbH & Co. KG with Franz Spiegel Buch GmbH . After the merger, CPI invested 13 million euros in modernizing the rotary printing and binding facilities. The joint sales organization CPI BOOKS has existed with Clausen & Bosse since 2003.

Together with the large printing company Clausen & Bosse in Leck (North Friesland) and the printing company Moravia Books in Pohořelice, Czech Republic, it belongs to the French "Groupe CPI" ( Chevrillon Philippe Industrie , group turnover of over 350 million euros), which is based in Paris . Ebner & Spiegel produces up to 450,000 paperbacks and 170,000 hardcover books per working day .

Salafist Koran print order

In the fall of 2011, Ebner & Spiegel received the order from the Cologne association “The True Religion” of the Salafist preacher Ibrahim Abou Nagie, observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution , to print 50,000 copies of a Koran translation. In a preliminary inquiry to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution by the printer, the security authorities did not express any concerns about the printing. However, the subsequent public distribution of the Koran met with massive criticism from politicians, as the Salafists are striving for an Islamic state of God that is incompatible with democratic and liberal values. The Koran version printed by Ebner & Spiegel serves missionary purposes. Although the criticism had persuaded the company not to fulfill the print order in April, it again produced tens of thousands of copies in June, again on behalf of Ibrahim Abou Nagie. According to the company, the resumption of printing took place at the instigation of the managing director of Ebner & Spiegel without the knowledge of the management of the CPI group; the already printed copies are not to be delivered and the commissioning work for the Salafist preacher is to be finally ended.
