In 1930 Ernst Klett the Younger expanded the regional school book program by purchasing the school book department of the Bonz publishing house . In 1945 he was one of the first German publishers to receive a publishing license from the American military government .

Common school books such as Learning English and the mathematics book Lambacher Schweizer appeared in 1947. In 1956 the first information office outside of Stuttgart was set up in Munich. From 1962 the series "Sounding Velcro Books" appeared with records and tapes as building blocks for multimedia lessons.

In 1968 a cartographic editorial office was established in the school book publisher. In 1970 Klett's biology department published the first slides (= work banners) for use on the overhead projector. In 1971, Klett presented a test program for computer-aided teaching at the “Interschul” teaching material show in Dortmund. Films for biology classes were also released.

In 1990, Ernst Klett Verlag Leipzig was the first branch of a West German publishing house to be founded in the new federal states.

After Justus Perthes Geographische Verlagsanstalt Gotha (founded in Gotha in 1785 ) was expropriated without compensation in 1953, nationalized and renamed VEB Hermann Haack Geographisch-Kartographische Anstalt Gotha in 1955 , Haack Gotha was a monopoly state publisher for the supply of GDR schools with geographical cartographic teaching materials. In March 1992 Justus Perthes Gotha (Haack Gotha) was reprivatised in favor of the original owner Stephan Justus Perthes and then - together with Justus Perthes Geographische Verlagsanstalt Darmstadt (1954–1994) - sold to what was then Ernst Klett Schulbuchverlag GmbH in Stuttgart. In the following years, the geographical and cartographic editors of these three publishing houses were concentrated at the Gotha location. In 2003 Gothaer Verlag changed its name to Klett-Perthes Verlag GmbH. In 2008 he became a branch of Ernst Klett Verlag GmbH and has not been independent since then. In March 2016 the traditional Gothaer publishing location was finally closed; the remaining activities and jobs were relocated to Ernst Klett Verlag Leipzig. Today, the preserved Perthes forum the collection Perthes Gotha as one of the largest geographical and cartographic collections in Europe on the historic publisher's address in Gotha.

The primary school publisher was relocated to Leipzig.
