School book publishers in Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany there is a great variety of textbooks for the different school subjects, school years, school types and for the different federal states, in which different curricula apply. The school book publishers sell at least 40,000 different school books.

The major school book publishers in the Federal Republic of Germany are Ernst Klett Verlag in Stuttgart, Cornelsen Verlag in Berlin and the Westermann publishing group in Braunschweig. These three groups divide 90% of the textbook market among themselves. The rest of the market consists of around 70 independent school book publishers such as B. the Mildenberger Verlag from Offenburg.

The vocational school book market is dominated by Bildungsverlag EINS (Cologne), in which various formerly independent vocational school publishers were absorbed such as Stam Verlag, Gehlen-Verlag, Kieser-Verlag and others. The entire publishing house has belonged to the Westermann Group since 2013 .
