Ivan Albright

Ivan Le Lorraine Albright (born February 20, 1897 in North Harvey near Chicago , Illinois , † November 18, 1983 in Woodstock , Vermont , USA ) was an American painter of magical realism .

Life

Ivan Le Lorraine Albright was the son of the successful Chicago landscape and portrait painter Adam Emory Albright (1862–1958) and Clara Wilson Albright (1862–1939). He and his twin brother Malvin Marr Albright (1897–) and their older brother Lisle Murillo Albright (1892–1958) were given the names of famous painters as their middle names. Together with his twin brother Malvin, Ivan Albright began his art studies at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago . He dropped out of Northwestern University and began studying architecture at the University of Illinois .

During World War I, Ivan Albright worked in a hospital near Nantes and documented the body's susceptibility to old age, disease, injury and death in drawings, which is considered to be the basis of his later style. Due to his slow way of working and his subjects contrary to the market, he was financially dependent on his father for a long time. In 1946 he married Josephine Medill Patterson (1913-1996), who came from a wealthy family.

With one of his most famous works, the picture The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1944/45), he took 2nd place in the Bel-Ami competition . Albright was elected a full member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in 1950, the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1957, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1979 .

His personal and artistic estate is now in the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Albright was uncompromisingly committed to the subject throughout his life and, as a “master of the macabre”, developed his very own style with his detailed paintings of creepy subjects of decay and decay. Due to the ingenious composition of his pictures, which were characterized by a horror vacui , and due to his glazed painting in numerous layers, Albright often needed years to complete his paintings.
