The Chicago Stock Exchange ( CHX ) is a stock exchange in Chicago . It is the largest regional exchange in the United States and is located in the One Financial Place skyscraper at 440 South LaSalle Street . The company is controlled by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Together with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), the Chicago Stock Exchange establishes the importance of Chicago as one of the most important financial centers in the USA.

The Chicago Stock Exchange was founded on March 21, 1882; Charles Henrotin was elected as the first chairman. In the same year the institute moved into a building on Dearborn Street . In 1894, the stock exchange was relocated to a high-rise building designed by the Adler & Sullivan architects on the corner of Washington Street and LaSalle Street . This one of the oldest high-rise buildings in Chicago was demolished in 1972; Parts are on display today both indoors and outdoors at the Art Institute of Chicago .
From July to December 1914 the stock exchange was closed due to the outbreak of the First World War . In 1920 the Stock Clearing Corporation was established. As part of the great stock market crash on October 29, 1929 ( Black Thursday ), the Chicago Stock Exchange was also badly hit. In 1949 the merger with the regional stock exchanges in St. Louis , Cleveland and Minneapolis / St. Paul to form the Midwest Stock Exchange , which also joined the New Orleans Stock Exchange in 1959 . In 1978 the Intermarket Trading System ( ITS ) was introduced in Chicago , which enabled trading on various stock exchanges. In 1990 the Chicago Stock Exchange was renamed .

In 2005, the SEC approved the conversion of the stock exchange company into a for-profit corporation . The stock exchange is now a subsidiary of CHX Holdings, Inc. In Chicago, shares of companies that are not listed here can also be traded with the permission of the SEC. The most important futures contract on US stocks, the future on the S&P 500 index, is primarily traded in Chicago as well as New York ( New York Stock Exchange ). The largest futures exchanges in the USA are based here today .
