Life
Chamberlain, who grew up in Chicago, worked as a hairdresser for the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 . From 1950 to 1952 he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and was a lecturer at Black Mountain College from 1955 to 1966 , met Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning , moved to New York in 1956 and lived alternately in New York and in the following years in New Mexico . Since he mastered the welding technique, he converted the images of abstract expressionism into plastic in his metal sculptures, and was the first artist to have the idea of using car scrap parts, which he first implemented in 1957. In 1958, assemblages from pressed car scrap followed and in 1966 “instant sculptures”. In later years he approached Pop Art and began to work in photography in 1977, creating panoramic photos. A large number of his works are traded by the internationally known gallery owner Karsten Greve , who is himself considered Chamberlain's greatest collector.
Chamberlain lived and worked in Sarasota , Florida since 1980 .
